Carlos Alcaraz secures his second consecutive Indian Wells championship, marking a triumphant return since his last victory at Wimbledon. He outplays Daniil Medvedev in a thrilling final match to retain the prestigious title.

Carlos Alcaraz secured his first trophy since Wimbledon last year by successfully defending his Indian Wells title against Daniil Medvedev.

In a rematch of last year's final, Alcaraz emerged victorious with a 7-6(5) 6-1 win in California on Sunday. He showed resilience by bouncing back from an early 3-0 deficit in the opening set to claim the 13th ATP Tour title of his budding career.

The 20-year-old Spaniard is the first person to win consecutive Indian Wells titles since Novak Djokovic in 2016.

In his on-court interview, Alcaraz shared, "I feel like this year is even more meaningful for me because I had doubts about whether I would be able to perform at my best before the tournament."

I wasn't feeling great about my ankle leading up to the tournament. Despite only being able to hit for 30 minutes without moving, I had a lot of doubts. However, I am really happy that I was able to push through and overcome the issues.

Alcaraz did face challenges during the tournament. In the quarterfinal, there was a swarm of bees during his match against Alexander Zverev. Then, in the semifinals, he had to come back from being one set down against Jannik Sinner, the Australian Open champion.

The Spaniard encountered more difficulties in the final match when Medvedev broke him in his first service game. However, Alcaraz fought back with a break of his own. He eventually managed to edge out his Russian opponent in a tie-break, which was tied at 5-5 at one point.

Alcaraz had a more smooth-sailing second set, breaking Medvedev twice at 1-0 and 4-1. He secured the win in just an hour and 42 minutes when Medvedev hit a cross-court forehand wide.

In the match, the 20-year-old Alcaraz impressed with 23 winners, 19 of which were on his forehand side, compared to Medvedev's 11. He also won 73% of his service points, outperforming the Russian who won only 56%.

Alcaraz now joins compatriot Rafael Nadal as the second male player to win five Masters 1,000 tournaments before the age of 21.
