Warning: The following contains spoilers for Outlander season 7, episode 2 and the Outlander books.
In Outlander season 7, episode 2, Roger, Brianna, and their family safely return to the 20th century, but it appears that their challenges are far from over. The ending of episode 2 introduces Wendigo Donner's intrusion at Fraser's Ridge and the likely destruction of Jamie and Claire's house. It seems that the storyline of the sixth Outlander book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, has come to an end. In season 7 of Outlander, which follows the seventh book in the romance drama series, An Echo in the Bone, Roger, Brianna, and their family are in for some troubled times.
Brianna's Job In The Future Will Accidentally Imperil Jemmy
Despite being centuries apart, the seventh Outlander book ensured that there was always a connection between Brianna and her parents through the exchange of letters. Once Roger and Brianna reached Fiona Graham in Scotland, they were handed these letters, which served as a means for them to catch up on Jamie and Claire's life unfolding in North Carolina. Unfortunately, the letters also revealed the existence of hidden gold and Jemmy, their firstborn, being aware of its whereabouts. This knowledge ultimately placed Roger, Brianna, and their children in grave peril during the events of An Echo in the Bone. As Outlander season 7 unfolds the narrative of the seventh book, the dangers resulting from their time travel will soon confront Roger, Brianna, and their offspring.
In An Echo in the Bone, Brianna is ultimately employed by the Hydro Electric Board in the 1900s as a plant inspector. This leads to her becoming colleagues with Rob Cameron. As Rob stumbles upon Roger's initial draft of A Practical Guide for Time-Travelers and receives a letter from Claire and Jamie mentioning hidden gold, he concocts a scheme. His plan is to coerce Brianna into extracting the truth about the gold's whereabouts from Jemmy. If she fails to do so, he threatens to withhold Jemmy and falsely claim that he transported him back to the past through the mystical stones. This perilous situation not only sets the stage for potential time travel in Outlander season 7 but also places Jemmy in significant danger.
Roger's Ancestor's Return Throwbacks To Outlander Season 5's Darkest Roger Story
Between the disappearance of Jemmy and the arrival of Buck MacKenzie from the past, Roger ultimately makes the decision to accompany his ancestor on a journey to the past in order to search for Jemmy, who was abducted by Cameron in An Echo in the Bone. Cameron's knowledge of both time travel and the Jacobite gold serves as evidence of how time travel has influenced the lives of Roger and Brianna in their own time. In fact, Jamie's mention of the gold would never have occurred if Brianna had not traveled back in time to save him and Claire, and Roger would never have written such a book if he had not followed Brianna into the 1700s.While Buck MacKenzie's accidental journey to the future in An Echo in the Bone portrays him as someone desperate for assistance to go back home, his significance to Roger should not be overlooked. In Outlander season 5, Roger goes through a distressing ordeal when Buck accuses him of adultery and orchestrates his capture by the red coats, leading to a near-death experience by hanging. As a result, their reunion is fraught with tension, for the memories of Roger's traumatic near-execution linger. Roger's responsibility to aid the ancestor who attempted to kill him will undoubtedly have a profound impact on his character, making Outlander season 7 an exceptionally captivating narrative.
