Sony's most recent financial report reveals that it has delayed multiple PlayStation exclusives originally set to launch in the second half of the current fiscal year. This development raises concerns about the company's ability to introduce compelling titles to the PS5 game catalog in the near future. Presently, the catalog mainly consists of cross-gen titles such as God of War Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7.
Despite the PS5 approaching its three-year mark, Sony has refrained from abandoning its cross-gen release strategy. This is due to the shortage of components caused by the pandemic, making it challenging for the company to meet the high demand for the console. Consequently, the adoption rate of the PS5 has been hindered. This year, however, Sony has started to move away from this strategy as the PS5 has established a significant lead in sales over the Xbox Series X/S. Nonetheless, the roadmap for PS5 exclusives currently remains relatively limited.
Sony has reportedly delayed some of its first-party titles that were initially set to release in the second half of its fiscal year 2023 until March 31, 2024. The company's latest financial report confirms this, stating changes in the launch dates of certain first-party titles. While specific titles were not mentioned, Sony assures that these changes will not significantly affect its annual revenue forecast. This indicates that the postponements did not include major upcoming exclusives like Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which is still scheduled to be released on October 20.
Regarding the specific games mentioned by the company, one possibility is the PS5 exclusive titled Stellar Blade. This action adventure game was initially announced in 2019, and Sony acquired its exclusivity rights from South Korean studio Shift Up two years later. Sony confirmed that Stellar Blade is set to be released in 2023, although it is worth noting that no specific launch date has been confirmed yet. Therefore, there is a chance that the release could be delayed and pushed into 2024.
Despite any potential delays, PlayStation gamers can still look forward to numerous upcoming games for both the PS4 and PS5 in the upcoming months. The roster of future PlayStation console exclusives also includes highly anticipated titles such as the remake of Silent Hill 2, Death Stranding 2, and the next AAA game from Naughty Dog—distinct from The Last of Us multiplayer spinoff.
