Zac Efron's role in High School Musical may have been defined by the song "Breaking Free", but a recently surfaced clip reveals that he wasn't the one singing. This realization may come as a bitter surprise to some millennials who adored Efron as Troy, the main character in the film.
The singing voice of Troy in the first High School Musical movie was actually provided by Canadian actor Drew Seeley. Although he later used his own singing voice in the sequels, Drew Seeley's vocals were used for the character's singing debut. As he went on to appear in films like 17 Again, Baywatch, and The Greatest Showman, some fans are now starting to understand that High School Musical was not exactly what they initially perceived it to be.
High School Musical fans find “painful” Zac Efron clip
A clip of Troy and Gabriella (played by Vanessa Hudgens) singing an acoustic rendition of Breaking Free has been discovered by X/Twitter users. They have pointed out that it is "painfully clear" that Efron used a singing double.
“The way it’s so painfully clear that Drew Seeley is singing here,” the initial quote tweet reads.
In response to the thread, one user expressed their surprise at discovering that Zac Efron did not sing most of the songs in High School Musical (HSM). They were unaware because the lip-syncing was executed so flawlessly.
Another user commented that Zac's singing voice improved significantly after he went through puberty and received vocal training, making him appear like a real-life Prince Charming. A third user recognized that Vanessa's voice also sounded different on the CD, particularly during the song "Start of Something New."
Seeley, renowned for his performances in Another Cinderella Story and Lovestruck: The Musical, was enlisted to provide the voiceover for Zac Efron in High School Musical due to concerns about Efron's vocal abilities.
In more recent years, Seeley candidly revealed on TikTok [via We] that he has no regrets about accepting the singing role in 2006.
When asked if Seeley would have preferred to play Troy himself, he replied, "Definitely. I actually auditioned for that role. Any actor would have jumped at the opportunity, but Zac did an excellent job. He was the perfect fit for the character.
"There's no need for any drama. Some people are trying to create unnecessary tension, but in reality, there isn't any."
In response to trolls criticizing his ability to match up to Efron, Seeley tweeted: "Calm down, trolls. I never claimed to be Zac. However, I played a significant role in the movie and tour. I take pride in it. #HSM."
"It is incredibly disheartening to be told that our voices are welcome but our identities are not," commented one fan in response to the viral video clip, while another fan countered, "However, Zac Efron did make an effort for the sequel!"
