Co-op shooter Second Extinction has ended development before its long-awaited full release due to technical and financial limitations.
The Xbox Series X/S game garnered significant promotion due to its captivating co-op FPS gameplay and dinosaur hunting. Current owners of Second Extinction can still enjoy the game, however, the servers are set to be taken offline in 2024, and the much-anticipated 1.0 update will not be implemented.
Co-op shooter Second Extinction, previously available on Xbox Game Pass, has halted its development, disappointing fans who were eagerly awaiting the game's full release. Developer Systemic Reaction announced on Steam today that technical and financial constraints have prevented Second Extinction from progressing further. Consequently, the game has been removed from storefronts, and online servers are set to be shut down in 2024.
Xbox enthusiasts may remember the extensive marketing campaign leading up to the launch of the Xbox Series X/S, which prominently featured Second Extinction. Despite being developed by an independent team, the game's cooperative FPS gameplay and dinosaur hunting attracted significant attention. However, after being released in early access on Xbox Game Pass in 2021, Second Extinction's popularity declined, leading to its removal from the service a year ago. A full launch that was expected in late 2022 never materialized, casting doubts on the future of Second Extinction's development.
Systemic Reaction has issued a statement regarding the events following the delayed full release of Second Extinction in 2022. The team explains that "critical issues" arose as the October 2022 release date approached, leading to the cancellation of their plans. Subsequently, it became apparent that Systemic Reaction lacked the necessary resources to proceed with the full launch, resulting in the decision to remove Second Extinction from circulation.
In the meantime, those who had previously purchased Second Extinction will still be able to enjoy the game. This applies to both the solo and multiplayer modes. The current intention is to shut down Second Extinction's servers "sometime next year," with Systemic Reaction pledging to disclose further specifics as they become available. The 1.0 update for Second Extinction will not be implemented, as development will conclude while the game remains in its early access phase.
Despite the disappointment surrounding the news of Second Extinction's cancelation, Systemic Reaction is determined to remain optimistic. They believe in the importance of "celebrating our failures" and consider the development of Second Extinction to be a success in many ways. The team members will not face any job losses due to this setback, and they will utilize the knowledge gained from the project in their upcoming endeavors.
Demonstrating their resilience, Systemic Reaction has already moved forward by releasing Ravenbound, an open-world action roguelite, in 2023. They have also released numerous patches and DLC packs for the game. Additionally, their first game, Generation Zero, received an update in July and was offered as a free PlayStation Plus release. It is only a matter of time before Systemic Reaction unveils their next exciting project.
Second Extinction was available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
