It has been more than ten years since The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim revolutionized the RPG genre, and its influence can still be felt throughout the industry. One aspect that is often praised is the game's exceptional replayability, with players constantly discovering new and entertaining features in the expansive world of Tamriel, thanks in large part to the dedicated modding community. Skyrim boasts an incredible array of items, with the Creation Club continuously adding fresh content to an already packed game. However, when it comes to The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda cannot include every item from its immensely successful predecessor, and they should consider leaving out unnecessary additions like the Flawed Varla Stone.
Skyrim offered players a wide variety of items to enhance their gameplay, but official development features alone are rarely enough for gamers. The Creation Club, featured in Skyrim's Anniversary Edition, showcased the immense talent of the fan base in creating additional content. Many beloved items in Skyrim originated from the Creation Club, providing players with multiple functionalities and enriching their playthroughs. The abundance of creativity is commendable, but as with all things, excessive indulgence can have negative consequences. Due to the combination of official content and mods from the community, Skyrim encountered a minor issue of redundancy, with multiple layers of overlapping loot.
Bethesda Needs to Find a Solution to its Flawed Varla Stones Problem
Soul Gems are a crucial resource in The Elder Scrolls 5. In the game's Anniversary Edition, players can acquire Flawed Varla Stones through the Rare Curios content in the Creation Club, which serve as a means to trap souls. These stones work hand in hand with the Soul Trap spell, enabling players to fill Soul Gems with the souls of defeated enemies in order to enchant weapons and armor. Skyrim's gameplay includes six different types of souls, and Flawed Varla Stones are capable of holding the first three in terms of power: Petty, Lesser, and Common. Unlike Common Soul Gems, Flawed Varla Stones can be reused, which makes them more preferable. In the early days of Skyrim, many players could relate to the experience of hoarding Common Soul Gems to preserve the souls of fallen adversaries. However, this method was inefficient as it required valuable inventory slots and the gems would break after a single use. The introduction of Flawed Varla Stones in the Creation Club changed this tedious dynamic by allowing players to continuously recharge them with souls. Prior to this, only Azura's Star and the Black Star were reusable, and acquiring Azura's Star was particularly challenging. Therefore, Flawed Varla Stones became a valuable tool in the early stages of Skyrim.
However, The Elder Scrolls 6 players are anticipating groundbreaking upgrades, making the addition of the Creation Club darling potentially unnecessary. The Flawed Varla Stones can only accommodate common souls, while Azura's Star can house all soul types in Skyrim except for Black Souls, which are exclusive to the Black Star. The overlap in functionality between Flawed Varla Stones and Azura's Star is evident and RPGs are ideally streamlined with minimal loot layers. Skyrim, however, has an excess of items that essentially perform the same task, particularly with the default Common Soul Gems.
While it makes sense for soul gems to have shared functionality as a way of staggering progression, The Elder Scrolls 6 could eliminate the inclusion of Flawed Varla Stones to address the issue of redundancy in Skyrim. Bethesda could address this by incorporating the reusability mechanic found in Common Soul Gems, which initially made the Flawed Varla Stones necessary. The significant overlap between Common Soul Gems, Flawed Varla Stones, and Azura's Star cannot be overlooked. While offering players a variety of choices is always important, The Elder Scrolls 6 should have distinct functions for its tools.
