Filming for the sixth season of The Crown began in the summer of 2022, even before the premiere of season 5. Unfortunately, shortly after the production began, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96 in September 2022. Following her death, her eldest son, King Charles III, immediately ascended to the throne.

After Elizabeth passed away, the show's creator, Peter Morgan, described the series as a tribute to the late queen. He expressed his silence and respect, emphasizing that production for season 6 would temporarily halt out of respect for Elizabeth.

When filming resumed, season 5 had not yet premiered, but the new episodes were already generating significant attention. In an open letter, Judi Dench vehemently criticized the show, deeming it entirely inaccurate, and urged Netflix to include a disclaimer on the series.

'The Crown' Season 6: Everything to Know About the Cast, Release Date and More

The Crown is coming back for one more season — and filming got underway before season 5 even premiered.

Production on season 6 of the Netflix drama began in the summer of 2022. Unfortunately, shortly after filming started, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96. As a result of her September 2022 passing, King Charles III, her eldest son, assumed the throne.

After Elizabeth's death, the show's creator, Peter Morgan, described the series as "a love letter" to the late monarch. He added that he had nothing else to say for now, emphasizing the importance of silence and respect. In tribute to Elizabeth, production on season 6 would temporarily pause.

When filming resumed, season 5 had not yet premiered, but the new episodes were already generating headlines. Judi Dench publicly criticized the show as "completely inaccurate" and called on Netflix to include a disclaimer.

In response, Netflix added a disclaimer to the show's official website and season 5 trailer. However, Princess Diana's biographer Andrew Morton expressed his disagreement, stating that he found it "ridiculous" to do so. He clarified that the show is a drama, not a documentary, and therefore not everything depicted in it will be completely authentic.

Has a Trailer for ‘The Crown’ Season 6 Been Released?

Netflix unveiled the initial glimpse of The Crown season 6 in October 2023. In a captivating voiceover, Claire Foy, portraying Queen Elizabeth, asserts, "The Crown epitomizes enduring significance; it defines who you are, rather than what you accomplish." Subsequently, Olivia Colman, portraying the monarch, reflects, "A part of our innate essence invariably dissipates. We have all relinquished something; it is not a matter of choice, but an obligation."

Staunton's Queen Elizabeth concludes the initial scene by entering the frame, ready to step onto a balcony at Buckingham Palace. With concern, she questions, "But what about the life and woman I abandoned?"

Alongside the enticing preview, Netflix released two fresh posters for the ultimate season. One showcases Princess Diana seated on a dock in a swimsuit, while the second depicts Elizabeth's imposing shadow cast over her as she traverses a spacious room.
