Zachary Quinto expressed his thoughts on the current status of Star Trek 4 during a panel discussion at the STLV: 57-Year Mission event. Breaking News: Star Trek 4 Finally Emerges from 7-Year Development Limbo with Exciting Update!

In 2016, Star Trek Beyond underperformed at the box office compared to its predecessors, Star Trek 2009 and Star Trek Into Darkness. This led to a decrease in interest for a fourth film. However, just a year later, Star Trek: Discovery breathed new life into the TV franchise through streaming. Its success resulted in the creation of multiple successful series on Paramount+. Polling conducted by Paramount Pictures indicated that moviegoers were keen on seeing the reunion of the Star Trek movie cast led by Chris Pine. As a result, preproduction for Star Trek 4 began. Unfortunately, different versions of the film spearheaded by directors S.J. Clarkson and Matt Shakman fell apart due to "creative differences." Consequently, Star Trek 4 was removed from its scheduled release date of December 2023.

Chris Pine himself suggested that Star Trek should not strive for the same level of box office success as Marvel Studios. Instead, he believes that Star Trek 4 should cater to the fanbase and have a more modest budget. The status of Star Trek 4 is currently uncertain, as is the potential storyline for the next movie. While Zachary Quinto and his co-stars have expressed their desire to return for Star Trek 4, they also appear content with the successful legacy they have already created. If Star Trek 4 never comes to fruition, they are willing to support the ongoing Star Trek series on Paramount+.
