Seth Rogen, star of Sausage Party, recently shared updates about the upcoming TV spinoff called Foodtopia. During a screening of a scene for Amazon's PR team, Rogen hyped the show directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan. The script for Foodtopia is written by Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg.
Sausage Party, released in 2016, tells the story of an anthropomorphic sausage who embarks on a journey after discovering the truth about what happens to groceries after they are purchased. The comedy was a major success, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated animated movie with $141.3 million until it was surpassed by Demon Slayer: Mugen Train in 2020.
In October 2022, Amazon Studios confirmed that a sequel show, Sausage Party: Foodtopia, was in development. Rogen discussed the progress of the show in a conversation with Collider. He mentioned that a scene from the upcoming series was specifically screened for Amazon's PR team. Rogen also shared Kristen Wiig's hilarious reaction to the "unbelievably shocking" sequel show, as she came in to record a few lines.
What To Know About Foodtopia
There was a special screening of a particular scene for the Amazon PR team. It's important for everyone to start preparing for it now, as you will likely have many discussions about it. Recently, Kristen Wiig came in to rehearse a few lines, and we have all become somewhat immune to the impact of the scene. We would just casually request, "Roll the scene!" and then she exclaimed, "Oh my God?! This is insane!"
While specific details about the upcoming project remain undisclosed, Foodtopia will witness the return of Sausage Party's original voice cast. Joining Rogen as Frank and Wiig as Brenda, the sequel will also feature Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton reprising their respective roles as Barry, Kareem Abdul Lavash, and Sammy Bagel Jr. Will Forte, Sam Richardson, Natasha Rothwell, and Yassir Lester are set to join the ensemble.
The upcoming production of Sausage Party: Foodtopia will be overseen by executive producers Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter, who will also serve as co-showrunners. Additionally, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex McAtee will executive produce under their Point Grey Pictures banner. Point Grey, a film and TV production company, is known for their involvement in projects such as The Boys, Invincible, and Pam & Tommy.
The sequel show is expected to be released on Prime Video in 2024, although the exact premiere date has not yet been announced. The original Sausage Party was generally well-received, holding a rating of 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It had a detailed score breakdown of 6.60 and 6.80 from top critics and all critics, respectively. It remains to be seen if the shorter format that worked well for the movie can be equally enjoyable when adapted into a longer TV series.
