Van der Sar clinched four Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League trophy during his six-year tenure at Manchester United. He later made a comeback at Ajax, assuming the position of chief executive in 2016, until his departure at the conclusion of the previous season.

After a disappointing campaign that saw the club secure a third-place finish in the Eredivise and fail to qualify for the Champions League, Van der Sar declared his departure from his position on the club's board, marking an end to his nearly 11-year tenure. "I believe it is necessary for me to create some distance, take a break, and engage in new endeavors," he announced via Twitter in late May.

"It is unsettling to be responsible for making decisions regarding the future of this remarkable club in the upcoming period. Consequently, I have chosen to tender my resignation."

Having made over 200 appearances for Ajax and experiencing European triumphs as a member of Louis van Gaal's team, the Dutch goalkeeper ventured to Juventus before ultimately joining Fulham in 2001.

Van der Sar made a move to Old Trafford four years later, where he achieved success in winning the League Cup twice and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup. However, United experienced disappointment with defeats to Barcelona in the 2009 Champions League final and the 2011 match at Wembley, leading Van der Sar to retire.

Van der Sar played 130 times for the Netherlands and for a spell was the nation's most-capped player.
