Summary
The SAG-AFTRA strike has caused a pause in production for several upcoming MCU projects, including Deadpool 3.
Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool 3, is uncertain about the film's official release date because of the strike and production delays. The potential repercussions of these delays extend beyond Deadpool 3, possibly affecting the planned MCU films for 2024 and the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga.
Shawn Levy, the director of Deadpool 3 from Marvel Studios, recently stated that the movie's scheduled release date of May 3, 2024, may not be met. Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019 ensured Ryan Reynolds' return as Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool, in the film. Alongside Reynolds, other characters from the previous Fox franchise, such as Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, will also make appearances in Deadpool 3. However, production on the movie was halted due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in early 2023. The WGA strike has concluded, but the SAG-AFTRA strike is ongoing, leading Shawn Levy to doubt whether Deadpool 3 will be released as originally planned.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, during which he was promoting his upcoming Netflix series All the Light We Cannot See, Shawn Levy expressed concern about the uncertain fate of Deadpool 3's release date. He acknowledged that the actors' strike and the significant pause in production have put the May 3, 2024, release in real jeopardy. Levy even admitted uncertainty about whether an official release date for the movie has been established. Deadpool 3 was initially slated for a November 2024 release but was pushed forward due to other delays in Marvel Studios' production schedule. Nevertheless, this recent development suggests that further delays may disrupt the progression of the MCU's Phase 5.
I am not certain about the official release date. Previously, we were scheduled for May 3, but the actors' strike and the prolonged production pause have jeopardized that timeline. We have completed half of the filming and I have already edited that portion. We are eagerly waiting to resume work and ensure the movie's release next year.
The SAG-AFTRA Strike Has Paused Several Upcoming MCU Projects
The Writers Guild of America strike, which took place from May 2 to September 27, 2023, had a significant impact on various projects' productions. However, it was the Screen Actors Guild strike that brought Hollywood to a standstill and resulted in the suspension of production on numerous developing projects. On July 14, 2023, SAG-AFTRA voted to strike, and as of October 17, 2023, no progress has been made in negotiation talks with the AMPTP. This lack of progress has had severe consequences for many projects within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that were already in production. This includes both feature films and TV shows being developed for Disney+, in addition to Shawn Levy's Deadpool 3.
Despite less than half of Charlie Cox's solo Disney+ series being filmed before the strikes, the production pause provided Marvel Studios executives with an opportunity to assess the show's progress and initiate a significant creative overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again. Production has also been halted for Wonder Man, a series led by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II that does not yet have a confirmed release date. Additionally, the reboot of Marvel Studios' Blade, as well as the films Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, scheduled for 2024, have all been affected by the pause in production. If Deadpool 3 experiences delays, it is likely that the planned MCU films for 2024 will also be postponed, potentially causing a ripple effect that could impact the conclusion of the MCU's Multiverse Saga.
