Larian Studios has pledged to update the credits for Baldur's Gate 3 to ensure that all members of its freelancing localization team receive proper acknowledgement for their contributions. This controversy arose shortly after the game's release, which was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Similar to many modern high-budget games, Baldur's Gate 3 features extensive localization efforts in order to enhance accessibility. Larian worked on localizing the game in 13 languages, including French, Chinese, and Brazilian Portuguese. Although Larian currently employs over 400 individuals as of 2023, they have previously opted to outsource localization tasks to external partners such as the Altagram Group based in Berlin.

Altagram is solely responsible for the absence of certain Baldur's Gate 3 localizers from the game's credits, as confirmed by Larian in a recent statement to Eurogamer. Upon being made aware of the issue, Larian promptly compelled Altagram to rectify the controversy by providing an exhaustive list of freelancers who contributed to the game. Consequently, the complete list of the RPG's localization staff will be added to the game in its first major patch, following the release of hotfixes for the day-one version of Baldur's Gate 3.

In the meantime, Altagram has publicly acknowledged their error on Twitter, admitting to the omission of credits for their Brazilian Portuguese localization team. In a lengthy statement posted on the platform, the company takes full responsibility for the oversight and commits to revising their content review practices to prevent such occurrences in the future. Currently, only Altagram's executives and project leads are credited as members of the Brazilian Portuguese localization team in the current version of Baldur's Gate 3.

The localization staff was disappointed to find an incomplete list of their contributions, especially considering the extensive effort required to localize Baldur's Gate 3. Fernando Moreiras, a member of the Spanish team, mentioned that the project involved translating over 2.5 million words and took nearly four years to complete. The immense size of the game's script is further highlighted by the fact that Baldur's Gate 3 offers thousands of different endings. This localization controversy is not exclusive to Baldur's Gate 3, as Starfield's language options also sparked anger among gamers after Bethesda's June 11 showcase.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC and launches September 6 on PS5, with an Xbox Series X/S port also in development.
