Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag asserts that the club is making every effort to acquire the ideal striker for Old Trafford before the upcoming Premier League season. Despite losing Cristiano Ronaldo during the previous winter World Cup, Man Utd's pursuit of a new No 9 has garnered significant attention, although a finalized agreement remains elusive.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielder Mason Mount have already signed contracts at Old Trafford, with the club spending almost £100m in total for their services. However, acquiring a striker has proven difficult for Ten Hag due to United's obligation to adhere to Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
"We are extensively involved at Man Utd, striving tirelessly with numerous individuals to secure the perfect candidate," he informed reporters in regards to his quest for a forward.
"I acknowledge the financial aspects and the regulations pertaining to Financial Fair Play (FFP), but at Manchester United, we make every effort to acquire our desired recruits."
Ten Hag removed Harry Maguire as the club captain earlier this week, as he had limited game-time during his first season and was given only eight Premier League starts throughout the entire campaign. This decision has left Maguire feeling disappointed, and he continues to be rumored with a possible transfer in the summer. However, Ten Hag emphasizes that the England center-back still holds significance within the squad.
"He acknowledged the disappointment for a player, however, emphasized that it can turn out beneficial for both the team and Harry.
"As an integral player, Harry's significance remains unchanged. With four centre-backs already on board, it is imperative that we maintain that minimum requirement, perhaps even consider adding one more. The previous season served as a testament to the need for depth, given the number of matches played. We are genuinely delighted to have Harry as part of our squad."
Ten Hag: De Gea deserves Old Trafford send-off
After 12 years as Man Utd's No 1 goalkeeper, David De Gea departed Old Trafford to little fanfare earlier this summer when talks broke down over a potential new contract.
Ten Hag proposed that the longstanding Spaniard deserves a fitting farewell in due course. "David undoubtedly played a significant role, making an immense contribution," he remarked. "However, each player eventually reaches a juncture when the club initiates alterations, and the club deemed this moment appropriate."
If it were up to me, he would receive a significant acknowledgment. With 545 games under his belt and his remarkable contributions and performances over such an extended period, his impact here has been monumental. He will forever be remembered as a legend for Manchester United and it is with heartfelt farewells, alongside the fans at Old Trafford, that we say goodbye.
Ten Hag confirmed on Thursday that Bruno Fernandes would be United's new captain this summer, following in the footsteps of Maguire. However, the Dutchman emphasized that leadership within the team should not solely rest on the captain's shoulders.
"We have a diverse squad consisting of team players, leaders, specialists, multi-functional players, and individualists," he stated. "It is important to cover all these aspects within a team, and I am pleased that we possess multiple leaders. While Bruno will assume the captain's responsibilities, he will receive support from his fellow teammates."
