Van der Sar secured four Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League triumph during his six-year spell with Manchester United. He further celebrated victory in the Champions League during his time at Ajax. Following his retirement, he rejoined Ajax in 2016 as the chief executive but departed the position at the conclusion of the previous season.

After a disappointing campaign that saw the club secure a third-place finish in the Eredivisie and fail to qualify for the Champions League, Van der Sar declared his resignation from his position on the club's board. After serving nearly 11 years, he took to Twitter in late May to express his intention to seek some distance, find solace, and pursue other endeavors.

"I don't feel comfortable making decisions regarding the future of this amazing club in the upcoming period. Therefore, I have made the choice to resign."

Following over 200 appearances for Ajax and achieving European success under the management of Louis van Gaal, the goalkeeper from the Netherlands transferred to Juventus before ultimately joining Fulham in 2001.

Van der Sar switched to Old Trafford four years later, where he achieved victory in the League Cup twice and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup. However, Manchester United faced defeat to Barcelona in both the 2009 Champions League final and again in 2011 at Wembley, leading to Van der Sar's retirement.

Van der Sar played 130 times for the Netherlands and for a spell was the nation's most-capped player.
