David De Gea has left Manchester United, the goalkeeper has announced.
De Gea leaves United as a free agent after 12 seasons at Old Trafford.
On social media, De Gea wrote a farewell message to all Manchester United supporters as his contract with United, which expired at the end of June, did not result in a new deal despite ongoing discussions throughout the season.
I am immensely grateful and appreciative for the love and support I have received over the past 12 years.
Under the guidance of my esteemed mentor, Sir Alex Ferguson, we have accomplished tremendous feats at this club. Each time I wore this shirt, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride, knowing that I had the privilege to lead and represent this esteemed institution. It is truly an honor that only a select few footballers have had the fortune to experience.
'Manchester will always be in my heart'
"It has been a remarkable and prosperous journey since my arrival," expressed De Gea.
"Never in my wildest dreams as a young boy leaving Madrid did I anticipate achieving the remarkable accomplishments we have together. Now, the moment has come to embrace a fresh endeavor, to push myself anew in unfamiliar surroundings.
"Manchester will forever hold a special place in my heart, molding and forever remaining with me. We have witnessed everything."
Comment from United manager Erik ten Hag: "Reaching the level of playing a single game for Manchester United requires exceptional skill and resiliency. Achieving it 545 times in a span of 12 years is a remarkable feat, especially as a goalkeeper where every match places you under intense scrutiny."
Having won Player of the Year awards four times each from both the fans and his team-mates, his level of performance is truly remarkable. He will forever be regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the club's history.
I am personally grateful for his contribution on the pitch, particularly the 25 clean sheets he helped achieve last season during my first year at the club. All the players and staff extend our best wishes to him for the next phase of his exceptional career.
