Christopher Nolan, the director of Oppenheimer, has confirmed that the movie's budget is 80% higher than what was initially reported. The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the renowned theoretical physicist whose contributions to the Manhattan Project resulted in the development of the first nuclear weapons by the United States. With a 3-hour runtime, the movie is set to hit theaters on July 21.
During the movie's premiere in London, Nolan spoke with Variety alongside the cast of Oppenheimer, where he disclosed that the film's budget is significantly greater than previously stated. Alongside discussing the extensive length of the movie, Nolan revealed that it has a budget of $180 million, surpassing the $100 million figure that was previously reported. Take a look at Nolan's remarks below:
The runtime is two minutes shorter than ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ so we cling to that. I said to (producer) Emma Thomas very early on that it’s going to be a three-hour film. I have to write a script that reflects that. That was our conversation with the studio. It’s a big story and needs a big talent. It’s a 180-page script and it’s a $180 million movie.
How Will Oppenheimer Perform At The Box Office?
It's important to note that our film's runtime is shorter than 'Avengers: Endgame'. This aspect is significant to us. From the early stages, I communicated to Emma Thomas, our producer, that the film will span three hours. Consequently, I must create a script that aligns with this duration. This specific discussion took place with the studio. Given the grandeur of the story, it requires exceptional talent. The script itself is an extensive 180-page document, making it a movie with a budget of $180 million. With a budget of $180 million, the impact of Oppenheimer's opening box office projections on its profitability remains uncertain. Currently, the film's box office projections suggest it will earn approximately $40 million in its first weekend domestically. While this outcome would have been satisfactory if the budget were $100 million, the higher budget necessitates the movie to generate a significantly larger sum to achieve success.
Despite initially low projections for its opening weekend, Oppenheimer is expected to excel throughout its theatrical run due to several factors. One key advantage is that the film has secured exclusive screenings in all IMAX theaters across North America for the first three weeks. Additionally, Oppenheimer stands out with its unique production elements, such as its complete absence of CGI and its script written entirely from a first-person perspective. Consequently, Oppenheimer has the potential to surpass expectations and achieve greater success than previously anticipated.
However, Oppenheimer will also face tough competition from Barbie, which is set to be released on the same day and is projected to have a staggering domestic opening weekend of $90 million. While current box office predictions raise doubts about Oppenheimer's ability to generate a profit from its budget of $180 million, the film's strong promotional efforts suggest it could still perform well. Only time will reveal whether Oppenheimer can ultimately achieve success with its considerable budget and the current box office outlook.
