Kevin Costner recently talked about taking five of his children to the Cannes Film Festival for a special family outing. The 69-year-old actor shared his thoughts during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on May 22. He explained that he wanted his kids to witness his work by bringing them to the premiere of his new film Horizon: An American Saga on May 19.
Costner shared that he brought five of his children to the French festival and made sure they were dressed in tuxedos and dresses. He wanted to show that they would always support and stand by him. The Yellowstone star was accompanied on the red carpet by his daughters Annie, 40, and Lily, 37, from his marriage to Cindy Silva, as well as his youngest children Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 13, from his marriage to Christine Baumgartner.
Costner shared how his family vacation did not go as planned. He explained that upon arriving, his sons immediately went fishing while his daughters decided to go on a boat ride. They told him they would see him later in the afternoon, but ended up returning at around eight o’clock after enjoying some drinks. Costner expressed his desire for the family to spend time together, but his daughters seemed content with the way things were going. Feeling a bit lost on what to do next, he jokingly mentioned that they might need a tour guide to help them out.
The actor, who cast his son Hayes in Horizon, which is released in cinemas on June 28, also spoke of the 10-minute standing ovation he received when the film premiered on the Sunday.
Costner shared his experience with Jimmy Kimmel, mentioning how he was unsure of what to expect. The audience remained quiet for most of the film, leading him to reflect on his journey and how he ended up at that moment. Despite the challenges he faced, Costner expressed gratitude for the continuous support from the audience, who initiated a round of applause that lasted for 10 minutes.
Costner had tears in his eyes as the crowd cheered for his first time directing in over a decade. Despite this, he insisted that he wasn't crying.
He explained with a smile, "I didn't cry. My eyes were just full. I was touched by what happened in France and by being at the biggest film festival in the world."
After a challenging year, the actor received a positive response following his split from Baumgartner in May 2023. They ended their 19-year marriage when she filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
Their split began in a messy way, leading to a four-month legal dispute before they finally reached an agreement in September 2023. The official end of their relationship and finalization of their divorce occurred in February.
