Bowen Yang has made a welcome comeback to the "Las Culturistas" podcast after taking a break for his mental well-being. During the July 26 episode, the 32-year-old joined his cohost and best friend Matt Rogers, expressing his gratitude to Rogers for keeping the show going while he was away. The two friends shared a heartfelt and tactile moment on air.
"I merely wished to impress you," Rogers expressed to Yang, who responded by overflowing with pride.
Prior to delving into the latest captivating news stories, ranging from the revival of the Real Housewives of New York City to And Just Like That, Yang acknowledged his absence from the podcast.
“To begin with, I would like to express my gratitude to each and every one of you,” he expressed his appreciation. “I must say, there was an exceptional level of understanding displayed. I never anticipated anything less, but it was truly heartening that everyone comprehended it completely. It is these kind of individuals who exist within our own little world, and for that, I am genuinely and immensely grateful.”
Rogers comforted his friend by emphasizing that the most important thing is for him to enjoy the experience. He also mentioned that cohosting the podcast should be a delightful addition to his life. (Yang later mentioned RHONY's Ubah Hassan, playfully calling it the "icing on the cake.")
Amidst his jokes, Yang provided his fans with an optimistic update regarding his mental well-being. "I'm feeling great. I'm on the road to recovery," he shared. He acknowledged that there are certain necessary steps he needs to take. At one point, he likened his experience to a fleeting moment in the film "Valley of the Dolls."
Yang went on to discuss his experiences with different medications as he navigated through his anxiety while working on the London set of the film adaptation of Wicked. (In this movie musical, he portrays the character Pfannee alongside the talented duo, Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater, who are now romantically involved.)
Earlier this month, Yang notified his followers on social media that he would be taking a brief hiatus from Las Cultch. In an Instagram Story, he explained that he was currently dealing with episodes of depersonalization, which were severely affecting him. He reassured his audience that he was making an effort to improve his situation and asked them to take care while he was away.
During this time, Rogers assured listeners that the show would continue even as Yang focused on taking care of himself. He went on to host three episodes alone from July 5 to July 19, featuring guests such as Miss Benny and Zane Phillips from Fire Island.
Reflecting on his decision to step back from the podcast, Yang hinted on Wednesday that his use of the term "depersonalization" had raised concerns. He further explained that this clinical term accurately describes his current experience. Rogers, in the meantime, urged critics to be more understanding.
Just before his cohost's return, Rogers shared an update on his friend's recovery. Speaking on the July 13 episode of the "On Display with Melissa Gorga" podcast, he emphasized that things were already improving. He expressed that there was now more perspective and steps were being taken to ensure Yang's well-being because he believes Yang deserves to be in a healthier place. Rogers concluded by stating that no one should have to go through each day feeling anything less than good about themselves.
