Hart Hanson, the creator of the popular crime drama Bones, has expressed his thoughts on the likelihood of a series revival. Bones, which was loosely based on the life of author and forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs, captivated audiences for an impressive 12 seasons with Emily Deschanel portraying Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan and David Boreanaz as FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth. Since the show concluded in 2017, both stars have admitted their openness to the idea of reprising their respective characters.
During a recent reunion for the show at a WGA picket demonstration, Variety had the opportunity to speak with Hanson about the potential for a Bones revival. The creator acknowledged that while the series' cast members still maintain contact with each other, there are complications in terms of the rights situation following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Additionally, finding the right storyline to reunite the cast poses another challenge. Read his comments below:
Has Enough Time Passed For A Bones Revival?
We maintain regular communication with each other. This holds true for everyone involved in the television series 'Bones'. We frequently check in with each other, seeking updates on each other's availability and tasks at hand. The current situation has become more complex due to the fact that 'Bones' was originally broadcasted by Fox, but now Disney has acquired 20th, resulting in them owning the show. Determining the ownership and the platform for broadcasting would require extensive involvement from numerous agents and lawyers. However, we continue to keep the lines of communication open. Every so often, we all find ourselves nostalgic enough to entertain the idea of reviving the show. It's difficult to say for certain, but perhaps this could serve as a catalyst for a potential comeback. Personally, I can envision it happening. Of course, the final decision heavily relies on the availability and willingness of both David and Emily. Without their involvement, it wouldn't be possible. We have been informed that they may not be interested, which is a significant factor. The actors will always speak truthfully, considering factors such as the quality of the scripts, the overall presentation, and whether it feels right. They won't accept a project simply because it involves us.
In today's entertainment industry, there is a growing trend of networks and studios seeking to maximize the potential of their popular intellectual properties. As a result, the concept of rebooting and reviving series has become increasingly popular. Whether it is a beloved television sitcom such as Will & Grace or a sci-fi drama like The X-Files, audiences have come to expect and appreciate the opportunity to revisit the fictional worlds they hold dear.
The gap between the original series and the revival can sometimes extend not just for several years, but even decades in certain cases. While the six-year gap that viewers of Bones have already experienced may seem long, it is only a fraction of the wait that fans of other shows have gone through. Additionally, longer wait times often lead to higher levels of anticipation from the audience.
On the other hand, considering that the original premiere of Bones aired more than a year before the revival of fellow crime show Dexter in late 2021, now might be a good time for the creator and cast of Bones to start discussing a possible revival. However, as Hanson points out, the chances of a Bones revival will largely depend on the willingness and availability of Deschanel and Boreanaz. It is difficult to envision a revival without both Bones and Booth returning.
