Lies of P: A Riveting Adventure with Familiar Bosses

Despite the release of several high-quality games this year, it is surprising that there has been a slight decrease in the number of Soulslike games. In 2023, only two notable titles, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, fit the Soulslike genre. This makes the upcoming game, Lies of P, even more intriguing. The recent demo has further heightened anticipation as it appears to be heavily influenced by Bloodborne. If the demo is any indication, it is likely that Lies of P's boss fights will draw inspiration from Bloodborne and other Souls games as well.

Since its reveal, Lies of P has shown clear similarities to Bloodborne, and these similarities have only become more evident as more of the game is showcased. Players had the opportunity to experience the gameplay for themselves when a demo was released during Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest last month. The feedback has been generally positive. The demo is quite extensive, featuring three unique bosses that showcase different visual and aesthetic elements. These bosses provide a glimpse into the types of boss encounters that fans can expect from the full game.

The quality of boss battles is crucial in determining the overall greatness of a Soulslike game. FromSoftware's consistent excellence in creating boss encounters has solidified its position as the genre's reigning king. Other game developers have attempted to replicate this formula, but few have succeeded. Games like SteelRising and Thymesia have shown moments of brilliance but failed to maintain that level throughout the entire game. Lies of P, however, is determined to avoid being included in this list of disappointments. The bosses showcased in the demo provide hope for fans that Lies of P has the potential to be one of the top Soulslike games on the market. Each of the three bosses clearly draws inspiration from Bloodborne, although Lies of P's aesthetics differ significantly from the Lovecraftian theme of the exclusive 2015 PS4 game. Nevertheless, there are notable similarities in their designs and move sets.

In the game, players first face the Parade Master, a massive mechanical figure with a hidden battery in its core and a large cage on its back. It moves slowly but with determination, and its design shares some similarities with Bloodborne's Cleric Beast, the game's introductory boss. Later on, players will encounter the Mad Donkey, a humanoid enemy with a donkey's head. This foe moves at a similar speed to the player, brandishing a large sword, and can be compared to the numerous Hunters encountered in Bloodborne.

Lastly, the final boss in the Lies of P demo is the Scrapped Watchman. Though dressed as a police officer, this electrified puppet strongly resembles the boss Darkbeast Paarl from Bloodborne in its attacks and mechanics. With the diminishing likelihood of a Bloodborne sequel, Lies of P may offer fans the closest experience to Bloodborne 2, making the game's launch highly anticipated to see if Neowiz, the developer, can deliver.

Lies of P launches on September 19 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
