Diablo 4 has taken the franchise's multiplayer component to the next level after Diablo 3 experimented with MMO elements. Although primarily a singleplayer ARPG franchise, Diablo 4 heavily incentivizes multiplayer gameplay, offering features such as joining clans, competing in PvP matches, participating in world events, and fighting alongside other players. These elements make the game feel like an MMO, and it's possible that Blizzard may consider taking the final leap towards creating a World of Diablo, similar to the success of World of Warcraft.
It Might Be Time for a World of Diablo
In Diablo 4, players are immediately introduced to the multiplayer component as they venture into major cities and explore the vast open world. Public events are scattered throughout, drawing players out of hiding and allowing them to fight alongside each other during their travels. This creates a dynamic and immersive world for players to explore. However, the game's multiplayer offerings don't stop there. After completing the prologue, players can invite up to three other players to join their party and experience the story together. Additionally, crossplay allows for seamless gameplay across all devices. For those who want to test their skills against other players, PvP areas are available, and MMO guild-like groups called clans offer even more opportunities for multiplayer interaction.
The potential for Diablo 4 to become an MMO is undeniable, as the game already possesses many of the hallmarks of the genre. While the core Diablo games should remain unchanged, Blizzard could explore the franchise's full potential by creating a World of Diablo MMO. This would allow players to explore the vast and intricate world of Sanctuary in its entirety, with multiple continents and kingdoms to explore. Additionally, post-launch expansions could further expand on this potential, creating a constantly evolving online world. Whether it remains an ARPG or evolves into a classic MMORPG, a World of Diablo MMO could offer players a unique and immersive experience in their favorite fantasy world.
Introducing new skills and abilities for each class from the Diablo franchise and allowing players to start their journey in different regions or kingdoms would create a fresh and exciting experience for fans. By incorporating classic Diablo elements and iconic characters, the franchise could reach new heights in an entirely new genre. Similar to the success of the Warcraft RTS series in the MMO genre, bringing Diablo into this space could fulfill the desire for social elements in the franchise. While it should not overshadow the beloved ARPGs, an MMO adaptation could invigorate the franchise and provide fans with a wealth of new stories to enjoy for years to come.
Diablo 4 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
