The developers of Mortal Kombat 1 have confirmed that Cole Young, the new character introduced in the 2021 film, will not be making an appearance in the upcoming fighting game. Summer Game Fest has been showcasing a variety of upcoming games, providing attendees with sneak peeks through reveal trailers and gameplay demos, as well as hands-on opportunities on the show floor. Mortal Kombat 1 was among the games available for attendees to try out, featuring a new Kameo Fighter system. While some fans have speculated that Cole Young might be a good addition to the game's roster, it seems that this is not the case. As a completely new character introduced in the film, he was created as an audience surrogate with no prior knowledge of the Mortal Kombat tournament or his Scorpion lineage, and it appears that his story will not be integrated into the game's canon.
"We're leaving that world to that world," responded NetherRealm Studio lead system designer Derek Kirtzic in an interview with ComicBook.com at Summer Game Fest when asked about the possibility of adding Cole to the Mortal Kombat 11 roster. Despite the perfect opportunity presented by Mortal Kombat 1, which was released after Cole's introduction, it seems that the developers have no plans to bring the character into the rebooted universe.
Some viewers found Cole Young to be a lackluster character in the 2021 film, with his motives and personality coming across as ordinary. Additionally, his magical armor was criticized as being too powerful, despite him requiring assistance to win battles. While the actor was praised for his performance under the circumstances, there is a general consensus that Cole Young should not be included in future Mortal Kombat games. Nonetheless, a sequel to the film is currently being produced, with Lewis Tan and other cast members set to reprise their roles, although no release date has been announced yet. Filming is said to have begun in June.
Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
