The nuns at Benedictine College have expressed their disapproval of the commencement address given by Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker. Butker, who is 28 years old, delivered a speech on Saturday, May 11 that sparked controversy. During his address, he voiced his opposition to LGBTQIA+ pride, women working outside the home, and access to abortion.
The Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica expressed their disagreement with Harrison Butker's remarks made during the 2024 Benedictine College commencement address. They believe that his comments do not align with the values and vision of the Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts college that they have been dedicated to. The statement was shared on Facebook on Thursday, May 16.
During his speech, Butker specifically spoke to the graduating women in the audience, highlighting that they have faced challenges and obstacles where false information has been spread about them.

"How many of you are sitting here now, about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career?" Butker continued. He then praised his wife, Isabelle, who he said "would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother." Butker added that "homemaker" is "one of the most important titles of all." "Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world."
The nuns’ statement addressed the remarks made about homemakers, emphasizing that their dedication is to God and God’s people. They have spent 160 years teaching and influencing many women.
Their community focuses on teaching young women and men more than just homemaking skills. They aim to create a compassionate, Gospel-centered home within themselves, welcoming others as Christ and empowering them to be their best selves.
The nuns also disagreed with the idea of a limited view of being Catholic. They expressed their desire to be recognized as a welcoming and inclusive community that upholds Benedictine values. These values, which have been around for over 1,500 years and have reached every corner of the world, are seen as fundamental to Benedictine College.
The Chiefs have not responded to Butker's comments. However, Jonathan Beane, the NFL's senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, stated that Butker was speaking on his own behalf. He emphasized that Butker's views do not represent the NFL as a whole. Beane also highlighted that the NFL remains dedicated to promoting inclusion, as it believes that this values strengthens the league.
