TikTok is introducing new text posts to directly rival Twitter and attract Twitter's susceptible user base. These customizable text posts on TikTok offer intriguing features such as sound and tags, bearing a resemblance to Instagram's Stories but with a more prominent presence.TikTok is making efforts to attract various user types by introducing new features, such as text post drafts, potentially replacing other social media platforms with a focus on text posts. The platform has recently announced its expansion of text posts beyond comments and captions, offering a range of recognizable customization options that set it apart from Twitter and other platforms. However, it appears evident that TikTok's motive in diving into text posts is to capitalize on Twitter's vulnerability and compete for its user base.
Twitter has had a challenging year. Since being purchased by Elon Musk, the once-dominant social media platform has seen a significant decline in its audience. This can be attributed, in part, to controversial decisions made by Musk, such as allowing hate speech and prioritizing posts from subscribers. Additionally, the emergence of competing text-post services like Mastodon, BlueSky, and Threads has further impacted Twitter's market share.
As Twitter experiences losses, other platforms, including TikTok, have seized the opportunity to attract new users. In a bid to tap into Twitter's audience, TikTok now offers users the ability to make text posts. Previously, users could only share photos or videos, but now they have a third option for text posts. The process is simple: TikTok users can easily write the text they want to share, and it will be published in a similar manner to their videos and photos.
TikTok offers users the option to customize their text posts in ways that platforms like Twitter cannot. These customizations include adding sound, a location tag, background colors, stickers, tags, and hashtags. Additionally, users can enable TikTok Duets for their text posts, allowing for unique collaborative content. In this sense, TikTok's text posts are similar to Instagram's Stories, but with a more upfront approach.
Another convenient feature provided by TikTok is the ability to create draft text posts. Similar to photos and videos, users can save their text post drafts as unpublished, giving them the opportunity to return and make edits before eventually publishing the content.
TikTok does not aim to become the next Twitter, as it has a distinct structure. Users who prefer short and engaging posts will unlikely consider TikTok their primary platform. Instead, TikTok provides extra features to appeal to various user preferences. Those transitioning from Twitter might realize that they no longer require platforms like Threads, BlueSky, or other text-focused social media networks, as TikTok can fulfill all their needs.
