Warner Bros.' movie Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, will be available for streaming on Max starting December 15th, following its release in theaters on July 21st. The film has made over $1.4 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023 and Warner Bros.' most successful film to date.
Furthermore, Barbie will make its debut on Max with a special American Sign Language (ASL) version, featuring ASL performer Leila Hanaumi signing throughout the film. This alternate version of the movie will be available on Max as a standalone title, with the sign language symbol displayed in its key art.
Max is committed to sharing stories in a meaningful way, so offering the biggest movie of the year in ASL, the Deaf community's first language, will amplify the impact of the film," said Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content. "By providing sign language interpretation, we aim to enhance the film’s message of inclusivity and provide a unique viewing experience for the Deaf community to enjoy with loved ones."
Margot Robbie will portray Barbie, with Ryan Gosling as Ken, as they navigate the transition from Barbieland to the real world. The star-studded cast also includes Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, and Issa Rae.
Following the success of the movie, director/co-writer Gerwig and star Robbie have both stated that they do not anticipate a sequel to Barbie. In an interview with the AP, Robbie expressed that they put their all into the first movie and did not intend for it to be the start of a trilogy. She further said, "It was like, great to put everything into this movie, so I can't imagine what would be next."
Max is currently offered at $10/month with ads, and $16/month for the standard ad-free plan.
