Backlash Over Mary Poppins Age Rating Alteration Sparks Controversy

Criticism erupts as the age rating of the beloved musical, Mary Poppins, is altered, with some fans expressing disapproval of the perceived 'woke' adjustment.

The age rating for the beloved musical Mary Poppins has been updated, sparking criticism from some fans who see it as a "woke" decision.

Looking back, it's clear that Disney made a decision in 2020 to include disclaimers on several of its older films available for streaming. This was done to address racist stereotypes and harmful portrayals found in these movies.

Disclaimers are commonly used in this situation, but last week, the age rating of the 1964 musical, Mary Poppins, was updated in the UK. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) decided to make this change because of a specific word used in the movie. However, the announcement has not been well-received by Mary Poppins fans worldwide.

Outrage over Mary Poppins age rating change

Mary Poppins fans are not happy with the recent decision to change the age rating of the beloved movie from a U to a PG. Many people are criticizing this move as being too "woke."

According to a BBFC spokesperson who spoke to CNN, the movie "Mary Poppins" (1964) contains two instances of the offensive term "hottentots," which was used by white Europeans to describe indigenous peoples of South Africa.

The spokesperson mentioned that although Mary Poppins has a historical background, the use of discriminatory language is not approved and goes against the language guidelines at U.

On X, a person expressed their thoughts on the matter by stating, "Woke is a brain disorder. Mary Poppins is no longer appropriate for all children..." Another individual commented, "Cancel culture is now targeting Mary Poppins, of all things. It appears that the woke movement is continuously trying to eliminate beauty and enjoyment."

Some people made fun of the decision to change the movie's rating. One person joked, "My kids have already seen it, so it's too late." Another person teased, "Now Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is rated 18 because of its sexual references."

Some people think that the change in age rating is not worth getting upset over. One person mentioned, "Changing it from 'U' to 'PG' is not really a big deal. Pretty meaningless if you ask me. Likely no one under the age of 80 knows or understands the context of that word anyway."
