A sniper near the Armenian border fatally shot an Azerbaijani soldier on Saturday, as confirmed by the Azerbaijani defense ministry. According to a press release from the ministry, the Armenian army initiated gunfire towards the Azerbaijani army using sniper rifles at noon on Saturday.

CNN cannot verify these claims independently. The ministry stated that on September 30 at noon, the Armenian armed forces targeted the Azerbaijan Army positions in the Kalbajar region with sniper fire from the direction of the Zarkand settlement in the Basarkechar region.

According to the press release, the defense ministry of Azerbaijan confirmed that one of its soldiers was killed in combat due to sniper fire. The ministry extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the fallen serviceman. Additionally, the Azerbaijan Army Units swiftly responded with retaliatory actions.

Armenias defense ministry denied Azerbaijans claim, saying in a Facebook post on Saturday it "does not correspond to reality."
