Joining forces for some Kung Fu magic, Awkwafina joked about channeling the Bee Gees with a mic mishap.

Everyone's beloved panda, Po (Jack Black), returns to the big screen in Kung Fu Panda 4. In this installment, Po teams up with a new companion, a fox thief named Zhen (Awkwafina), as they face off against the villainous Chameleon (Viola Davis). The Chameleon's sinister plan involves stealing the Staff of Wisdom to gain the kung fu abilities of Po's past adversaries.

Jack Black and Awkwafina, who play Po and Zhen, share a strong comedic rapport. Having previously collaborated on Jumanji: The Next Level and being close friends in real life, they effortlessly bring their characters to life in Kung Fu Panda 4. Their natural chemistry shines both on and off the screen, adding an extra layer of charm to the film.

Jack Black and Awkwafina recently sat down with Screen Rant to discuss their roles in Kung Fu Panda 4. The interview took place on a set at Universal Studios Lot, recreated to resemble a scene from the film. One interesting point they touch on is the rarity of being able to record their lines together in the recording booth, a unique experience in the world of animation.

Awkwafina, who plays the character Zhen in the movie, talks about the lessons her character learns from Po, a beloved character in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. On the other hand, Jack Black shares his approach to voicing original characters like Po, compared to established ones like Bowser and Claptrap from Borderlands. He also gives a quick update on Super Mario Bros. 2 during the interview.

Jack Black has been the voice of Po for a long time. When asked if he has learned anything from playing the character over the years, he shared that he believes in holding on to the magic of play. This is where he finds most of his inspiration for comedy and music. He thinks it's important to stay connected to that youthful imagination as you grow older.

Awkwafina, I really enjoy watching you and Zhen together. Do you think Zhen has picked up anything from Po?

Awkwafina: Absolutely. I believe they come from similar backgrounds but have different perspectives. Po has a lot to offer in terms of youthful energy, positivity, and the natural instinct to protect and trust. So, yes, I think Zhen learns a great deal from Po.

Kung Fu Panda 4's Recording Booth Is Where Magic Is Made As A Team

Recording in the booth together for Kung Fu Panda 4 was a unique experience. Awkwafina shared that it was hard for her to keep a straight face because Jack Black brought so much energy and fun to the recording sessions. She felt like she may have ruined some of his takes because of his wild antics, but overall, the experience was awesome and full of laughter.

Jack Black shared that he loves riffing with Awkwafina because of her magical sense of humor. He mentioned how some actors prefer to have the whole cast present during sessions. However, due to efficiency reasons, animators and directors need them to record individually.

Awkwafina expressed her desire to have all six actors record together like the Bee Gees, huddled around one mic with headphones. She thought it would have been a cool experience.

Jack Black: That's old school recording. Get them sweet harmonies.

Awkafina: It's an analog sound, for sure.

How Po Differs From Jack Black's Other Famous Voice Acting Roles

Jack Black: When I voice characters like Bowser and Claptrap, I have to find their unique voices. They are fun to play because I can hide behind them and do things I wouldn't normally do. However, I feel closer to Po because he is more of a personal performance for me.

The difference is that when I'm Po, there's nowhere to hide. It's just Jack Black, but I don't like talking about myself that way. The essence of Jack Black is really Po. Disgusting.

I have to ask, will Bowser make another appearance? Do you have any news on a Super Mario Bros. 2?

Jack Black: I don't know. But never say never. That was a fun one.

After facing death-defying challenges and defeating top-notch villains with his bravery and martial arts skills, Po, also known as the Dragon Warrior (played by Jack Black, a Golden Globe nominee), is now called upon by destiny to take on a new role. He is chosen to be the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. This presents a couple of challenges for Po. Firstly, he has no experience in spiritual leadership, and secondly, he must quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before he can step into his new important position.

Even more troubling is the recent appearance of a powerful sorceress named Chameleon, who has her sights set on Po's Staff of Wisdom. Chameleon, portrayed by Oscar® winner Viola Davis, is a tiny lizard with the ability to transform into any creature. With the staff in her possession, she could bring back all the villains that Po previously defeated to the spirit realm. In order to stop her, Po will need some assistance. He crosses paths with Zhen, a clever and quick-witted thief portrayed by Golden Globe winner Awkwafina. Despite their differences, Zhen's skills will be crucial in their mission.

As they work together to protect the Valley of Peace from Chameleon's sinister plans, this unlikely duo will learn to rely on each other. Throughout their journey, Po will come to realize that heroes can emerge from unexpected places.

Check back soon for our other interview with director Mike Mitchell.
