The Little Mermaid's Song Changes Explained
Despite the fact that Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the lyrics and Alen Menken, the original composer of The Little Mermaid, created the music for "The Scuttlebutt," the song has faced widespread criticism for not living up to the tone or quality of the beloved songs from the original movie. While there are some positive comments on the video, overall, the reception to the song has been less than favorable.
Out of the three new songs in The Little Mermaid, "The Scuttlebutt" has proven to be the most polarizing. While "Wild Uncharted Waters" and "For the First Time" have received mostly positive feedback, "The Scuttlebutt" has been met with mixed reviews. Rolling Stone, for instance, has dubbed it as "one of the worst Disney songs ever" and "a personal attack on everyone's eardrums."
The Little Mermaid remake featured several changes to its songs, including the removal of "Daughters of Triton" and "Les Poissons" and alterations to the lyrics of "Kiss the Girl" and "Poor Unfortunate Souls." These changes were made to update the film for a more modern audience and remove any potentially offensive or insensitive elements. While some of these changes have been met with criticism, the film has still received a high audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and is performing well domestically, despite its struggles in Asia. With the recent release of "The Scuttlebutt" online, it's possible that more scenes from the film will be revealed in the near future.
