An iconic JRPG that gained a following on the Game Boy Advance is getting a high-definition remaster, introducing Riviera: The Promised Land to a new generation of potential fans. Originally released in 2005 on the Game Boy Advance and later on the PlayStation Portable in 2008, Riviera: The Promised Land has been inaccessible on modern platforms for quite some time. However, the original developer, Sting Entertainment, is now bringing it back, although there may be some conditions attached.
Riviera: The Promised Land not only offers a captivating fantasy RPG experience with turn-based combat, but also incorporates elements of dating simulation gameplay. The protagonist, Ein, can form relationships with other characters within the game, ultimately influencing the ending of Riviera: The Promised Land. This title is the first installment in the Dept. Heaven series of fantasy RPGs developed by Sting Entertainment.
Sting Entertainment has recently announced on Twitter that they are currently working on an HD remaster of Riviera: The Promised Land. Today marks the 21st anniversary since the game was originally released in Japan for the WonderSwan Color handheld console. However, there are no specific details available yet regarding the remaster, including its release window or supported platforms.
It's worth noting that the announcement for Riviera: The Promised Land was made exclusively in Japanese, without any mention of a worldwide release. Therefore, it remains uncertain whether the remaster will receive a localization or not. On a positive note, Sting Entertainment has previously released a worldwide remaster for the second Dept. Heaven game, Yggdra Union, earlier this year in early access. However, it should be mentioned that this localization is currently only available for PC, while the Switch version remains exclusive to Japan.
It is hoped that Riviera: The Promised Land will be released with an English localization on PC. There are also broader hopes for a potential release on the Switch or PlayStation in the future, although there is currently no indication of this. Sting Entertainment is dedicated to releasing these Dept. Heaven remasters to the best of its abilities.
At the very least, today's announcement of Riviera: The Promised Land should give hope that this classic JRPG, which is currently difficult to find, will soon be available on a modern platform. Even if it is not officially localized, fans can create their own translations on PC. Furthermore, if the cult classic Game Boy Advance JRPG gains enough of a modern following, it may motivate Sting Entertainment to bring the entire Dept. Heaven series to various modern platforms in the future.
Riviera: The Promised Land Remastered is in development.
