In recent years, there has been a rise in popularity for current games that have a retro style. Games such as Cuphead, Bloodstained, The Messenger, and Dead Cells have gained a lot of attention. Sea of Stars, a game developed by Sabotage Studios, captures the essence of a retro title while incorporating modern elements seamlessly. This captivating turn-based RPG follows the journey of two "special" children named Valere and Zale, who possess the ability to summon eclipse magic, the only force capable of defeating the nefarious Fleshmancer.
Similar to many RPGs, players have the option to explore optional dungeons known as Solstice Shrines in Sea of Stars. These dungeons offer unique gear and skills, making them worth the players' time to complete. However, unlocking a secret portal beneath the Elder Mist awaits those who complete all five shrines. This portal allows Zale and Valere to engage in a hidden boss battle. Locating these shrines, however, requires more effort as they can be found later in the game and may require specific items that players may not yet have acquired.
Evermist Island
The five shrines within Sea of Stars present a challenging yet highly rewarding endeavor. During their journey across Evermist Island, Zale and Valere will first encounter Mooncradle. However, it is advisable to postpone tackling this particular shrine until later. When the time is right, players will discover a misty region beneath Moon Path that branches off to the right, housing the appropriately named Evermist Solstice Shrine. Before gaining entry, players must obtain the Shrine Key from Headmaster Moraine, as it is required to unlock the entrance.
Wraith Island
In Sea of Stars, as players explore the vast world, they will eventually stumble upon Lucent, a bustling town. Amidst the town's intricate layout, one cannot help but notice the mysterious, dimly lit buildings scattered throughout. However, an enigmatic structure stands out from the rest, perched on a raised platform in the distance. Frustratingly out of reach, it can only be accessed using the Grapplau, a formidable grappling hook obtained from the Necromancer's Lair. To acquire this indispensable tool, players must first locate the elusive Solstice Shrine nestled within the depths of the lair.
Serai's World
Serai’s Shrine presents a challenging experience, as it boasts an entrance puzzle that requires the manipulation of sunlight and the power of solstice magic in order to gain access. Adding to its allure is the fact that it is not a mandatory location, making it a popular choice among avid hunters of in-game trophies and achievements. To embark on this adventure, players must possess the ability to fly, obtained by defeating the formidable Dweller of Dread. Despite the prerequisites, delving into this area is highly recommended, as it houses one of the game's most coveted weapons: the Star Shards.
West Island (Home World)
The last two Solstice Shrines can be found in the vicinity of Home World. The first one is located on the Southwestern side of the map, between Sleeper Islands and the aforementioned Evermist Island, known as West Island. Upon arrival, players must unlock the shrine. This can be achieved by stepping on the nearby button to elevate the crystal platform and then adjusting the time to illuminate all the surrounding crystals. Once completed, the wall will open up, inviting players to venture inside.
East Island (Solstice Shrine Island)
Finally, there is the East Island, located in the Northeast and close to Mesa Island. In order to explore this island, players will need to have the fly ability. It is recommended to wait until completing the main story before venturing to the East Island. When the time comes, approach the Shrine and have either Valere or Zale illuminate all the runes to unlock the entrance. Players may have already visited some of these locations in their search for the precious Rainbow Conchs.
