Ariana Grande paid tribute to '90s icons Monica and Brandy on her latest album, Eternal Sunshine.

The 30-year-old singer released her highly anticipated album on Friday, March 8. Eternal Sunshine is filled with references to her breakup with ex-husband Dalton Gomez and her new relationship with Wicked costar Ethan Slater.

One possible tribute to Slater, aged 31, is found in the song "The Boy Is Mine." This track not only shares its title with the 1998 hit by Brandy, aged 45, and Monica, aged 43, but also incorporates elements from the classic R&B song.

In the first verse, Grande sings, "I’m usually so unproblematic / So independent / Tell me why / ‘Cause the boy is mine, mine." The chorus reinforces her claim on the boy, expressing her anticipation to be with him and noting how everything seems to align in her favor, declaring, "The boy is mine."

Grande shared insights on the creation of “The Boy Is Mine” during a conversation with Zane Lowe for Apple Music. She explained that the song marked a shift in her musical approach, with her embracing a different persona. Describing it as a "bad-girl anthem," she noted that the track is closely linked to "True Story," another song on Eternal Sunshine.

Grande expressed her desire to put her own spin on Monica and Brandy's hit song "The Boy Is Mine." The original track was a huge success, spending 13 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1998 and becoming a classic in the R&B genre.

Despite initial doubts about the idea, Grande acknowledged that many of her fans enjoy a "bad-girl anthem." She saw this as an opportunity to create a more sophisticated and elevated version of that kind of song.

Grande previously mentioned that her song "The Boy Is Mine" included parts of an unreleased track called "Fantasize," which had leaked in 2023. It was rumored to have reached the Philippines' Spotify Daily Top Songs list before being removed. The song gained popularity on TikTok, leading Grande to talk about it. She revealed that she originally wrote the track for a comedy sketch about a girl group and had plans to revisit the hook for future use.

In a February 26 interview with Zach Sang, Grande described "The Boy Is Mine" as her own version of "Fantasize." She clarified that the songs are now completely different, despite having been heard by others due to the leak. She humorously mentioned that even though people had "stolen" the songs, they had evolved into unique creations.
