Apple has completed its annual series of OS updates. For mobile devices, we now have iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, while Mac users can enjoy macOS 14 Sonoma. After extensive testing, Apple has officially released the new operating system for Mac computers of all generations. Today, Apple has introduced the first major update to this operating system, although it seems that the significance is primarily reflected in the version number.
Following a short beta testing period, Apple has now launched macOS 14.1. The brief testing period can be attributed to the fact that this update doesn't bring a substantial amount of changes. It primarily addresses a few bothersome issues and includes a few minor feature tweaks, although they will not drastically alter your PC experience. The complete list of changes is as follows:
This update introduces improvements, resolves bugs, and ensures security for your Mac. It includes the following enhancements in the Music app: expanded Favorites section that now includes songs, albums, and playlists. Additionally, you have the option to filter and view your favorite items within the library.
Apple warranty status for Mac, AirPods, and Beats headphones and earbuds are available in System Settings
Fixes an issue where the System Services settings within Location Services may reset
Fixes an issue that may prevent encrypted external drives from mounting
Some features may not be available for all regions, or on all Apple devices.
Apple typically reserves its significant updates for its major operating system releases, which occur once a year for both iOS and macOS. Therefore, if you find macOS Sonoma already outdated, it may be worth waiting for the release of macOS 15 next year. Sonoma itself was a relatively mild update, introducing screensavers, a login screen redesign, a Game Mode for a limited number of games compatible with Mac, and other minor additions. However, this update does address a few issues and refine certain aspects, essentially presenting a more polished version of the initial Sonoma release. There is no reason not to give it a try, especially if you are already using Sonoma. The update is now being rolled out to Mac computers that were eligible for the initial macOS 14.0 release, so be sure to check it out promptly.
