Following the allegations against Jonathan Majors, who stars in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Anthony Mackie, the star of Captain America 4, has shared his perspective on the matter. This marks the first time someone associated with Marvel has publicly commented on the case.
In the upcoming film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the main characters, along with their allies, find themselves transported to the quantum realm. Here, they confront Kang the Conqueror, a powerful adversary. Interestingly, the director of the film revealed to fans that Kang poses a greater threat than Thanos, who previously defeated the Avengers and caused the disappearance of half the universe's population, after being steadily built up over three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Majors, the chosen actor for the role of Kang, received praise from the director of Loki who believed he was the perfect fit to portray the character's various versions. His performances in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania were highly acclaimed, indicating a promising future for him as the villain in the following years. However, his career took an unexpected turn when he faced allegations of assault, strangulation, and harassment, resulting in his arrest. In response to this situation, Anthony Mackie, the star of Captain America 4, emphasized the importance of due process concerning the accusations.
"We are a nation founded on the principle of 'innocent until proven guilty.' It is a fundamental value of our country," said Mackie in his response. "Nothing has been proven about this individual. Nothing. So, everyone is to be presumed innocent until proven guilty. That's all I can say. It's concerning how our society has reached this point. But as a nation, the presumption of innocence stands." Although Mackie's call for calm and rationality holds some validity, the emergence of additional alleged victims after Majors' arrest has made it more challenging to maintain an objective public sentiment on the matter.
While Mackie is the first representative from Marvel to address the situation, the official stance of his employer has been known for some time. Marvel Studios reportedly has not discussed replacing Majors, despite the actions taken by other companies and government agencies he had previously worked with. With the court date scheduled for August 3rd, the company is either abiding by Mackie's plea for due process or evaluating their investment in the actor, who was slated to appear in at least two more films.
Captain America: Brave New World is scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 26, 2024.
