Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Ahsoka episode 5.
Summary
Ahsoka episode 5 brings The Clone Wars into live-action; however, it falls short in accurately portraying Ahsoka's fighting style in alignment with the animation.
In the flashback scenes, young Ahsoka is observed utilizing an incorrect lightsaber form, straying away from her iconic style.
Ahsoka's current influence on her younger self's actions explains the discrepancy, as it showcases Rosario Dawson's fighting style. In episode 5 of Ahsoka, The Clone Wars transitioned to live-action with two spectacular flashback sequences. While the scenes were impressively detailed, there was a significant issue that didn't align with the animated series. In the present, Ahsoka Tano is seen floating in the seas of Seatos, experiencing a pseudo-vision where she battles Anakin Skywalker in the World Between Worlds. This battle symbolizes her internal conflict regarding the path of a warrior that she has been forced to follow, and Anakin guides her through her past to impart an important lesson.
Ariana Greenblatt portrays young Ahsoka in the flashbacks, where she participates in the Battle of Ryloth and the Siege of Mandalore. During the Battle of Ryloth, Ahsoka wields her iconic green lightsaber and fights alongside the clones of the 501st. However, in the Siege of Mandalore, she utilizes the two blue lightsabers that were gifted to her by Anakin. In both battles, Ahsoka showcases her agile combat skills in Form V, also known as Djem So, which is the same style employed by Anakin. However, it should be noted that her fighting style in the flashbacks differs from how she fought in The Clone Wars animation.
Young Ahsoka Is Using The Wrong Lightsaber Form
In the Clone Wars flashbacks of Ahsoka episode 5, young Ahsoka does not use a reverse grip on her lightsabers. Throughout The Clone Wars, Ahsoka's preferred lightsaber form is the Shien style, which involves holding her lightsabers with a reverse grip. Although Ahsoka is skilled in both Djem So and Shien, she predominantly uses the backward grip style in almost every season of The Clone Wars. However, in Ahsoka, there is a shift towards using Djem So more frequently, as Rosario Dawson, who portrays Ahsoka, rarely holds her lightsabers in a backward grip.
The reason Ahsoka heavily favors Shien in The Clone Wars is because it is well-suited for blocking blaster bolts, a skill she needs to constantly defend herself with. By not having young Ahsoka hold her lightsabers in the reverse grip used in the animation, Dave Filoni emphasizes that these flashbacks are not real. While Anakin, Captain Rex, and young Ahsoka were intricately designed with attention to detail, the absence of Ahsoka's iconic lightsaber style is a significant oversight.
Why Ahsoka's Clone Wars Flashbacks Show The Wrong Lightsaber Form
Despite the apparent disruption in continuity, Filoni has a valid explanation for why Ariana's Ahsoka fights similarly to Rosario's Ahsoka. In the beginning of the flashback, a young Ahsoka expresses surprise and states, "this is the Clone Wars," suggesting that Rosario's present Ahsoka is influencing her younger self. This accounts for why Ahsoka reverts to Djem So during the vision, as it is the fighting style of Rosario's Ahsoka. After the vision concludes, the present Ahsoka continues to battle Anakin using Djem So. However, it is worth noting that Dave missed an opportunity for Ariana Greenblatt to display the character's classic lightsaber form as Ahsoka. New episodes of Ahsoka are released on Disney+ every Tuesday at 6pm PT / 9pm ET.
