Before making her debut on Disney+, Ahsoka Tano's character in Star Wars had already been portrayed as a former Jedi master. Despite leaving the Jedi Order before the Clone Wars came to an end, Ahsoka never achieved the official title of Jedi Knight like her own master, Anakin Skywalker. Additionally, she never took on an apprentice within the formal framework of the Jedi Order. However, Ahsoka has had prior experience as a teacher, and a lesson she imparted to Ezra Bridger in the past could potentially shed light on why she faced difficulties in training Sabine, the Mandalorian artist who is confirmed to be Ahsoka's apprentice in the forthcoming Ahsoka series, as evidenced by the trailers. One of these trailers shows Ahsoka (played by Rosario Dawson) ending her training of Sabine (portrayed by Natasha Liu Bordizzo), although the exact reason is yet to be revealed. This suggests that the show will heavily focus on the events leading to their fallout and subsequent reunion. Interestingly, a Star Wars short film released in 2018 could provide some insight into the challenges Ahsoka encountered while attempting to train Sabine.

Ahsoka Briefly Trained Ezra Bridger

In the animated Star Wars shorts Forces of Destiny, Ahsoka meets Ezra Bridger right after he obtains his first lightsaber crystal. In this episode from the second season, Ahsoka shows Ezra that being a Jedi is not just about the weapon. She removes Ezra's kyber crystal and attacks him with her own lightsaber, surprising him with her aggressive training methods. This teaching style is reminiscent of Ahsoka's former master Anakin Skywalker, who employed similar tactics during his training sessions. Anakin once had clone troopers surround Ahsoka and repeatedly stun her until she could defend herself effectively, a skill that saved her life during Order 66. Ahsoka's lesson to Ezra reflects this same teaching style.

Did Ahsoka Fail Sabine Wren?

Sabine Wren briefly received lightsaber training from Kanan and became Ahsoka's apprentice after the events of Star Wars Rebels. However, their training together was short-lived and Ahsoka left with Sabine's training incomplete. It is interesting to note that Ahsoka seemed to enjoy teaching others, like she did with Ezra in Force of Destiny, but it was not known until later that she would have her own Padawan.

Perhaps Ahsoka is afraid of forming a deep bond that comes with having an actual Padawan. This would make sense considering her complicated relationship with Anakin, where she had to leave him and later reunite with him as the corrupted Darth Vader. It must have been a traumatic experience. Despite now being in the role of a master, Ahsoka's reluctance and desire for distance may explain why she ultimately failed to fully train Sabine in the ways of the Jedi.
