In Episode 9, we see Eddie reconnecting with Kim, a storeowner who bears a striking resemblance to his late wife. Despite spending time together, Eddie and Kim have not progressed their relationship further.

Eddie is trying to keep his new friend a secret from the rest of the 118, while Kim visits the firehouse to bring brownies for the crew. Buck (Stark) is surprised by how much Kim looks like Shannon when he sees her there.

Without delay, Buck goes to Eddie and asks him about his relationship with Kim. Eddie admits that he is unsure about his feelings for her, and the conversation ends with Buck expressing his concerns for his best friend.

Eddie responds, "I'm also worried about myself."

Feeling guilty about the potential hurt he may cause, Eddie confesses to Kim that she looks just like Shannon. He admits that he does have feelings for her, but also acknowledges that he has been spending time with her in the hopes of Shannon coming back. Despite this confession, they part ways on good terms. However, the next day, Kim unexpectedly shows up at Eddie's house dressed as Shannon, urging him to speak his mind.

Still shocked from meeting Amir, the man who lost his family in the fire Bobby caused in Minnesota, Captain Nash decides to retire, surprising Athena. She tries to get Bobby to open up by inviting Amir for coffee at their house. Although Amir agrees at first, he later feels overwhelmed and asks Bobby to stay away.

Meanwhile, Bobby secretly trains the rest of the 118 to take over his role, guiding them on calls, teaching them his recipes, and having personal conversations with each of them. By the end of the episode, Bobby confesses to Athena that he originally planned to commit suicide after saving 148 people, the same number who died in the fire, saying, "I'm not supposed to be here."

In the last moments of the episode, Bobby daydreams about his dad who struggles with alcohol. Suddenly, he snaps back to reality to find his house in flames and Athena unconscious in their bedroom. Bobby saves her and makes sure she is safe. Then, he clutches his chest and collapses before the screen fades to black.
