In the fourth quarter of Microsoft's 2023 fiscal year, the company released its financial report, which unveiled record-breaking monthly Xbox user numbers and impressive sales figures, among other notable accomplishments. Contrary to previous claims of losing the console wars in June, these latest insights into Microsoft's financial performance demonstrate sustained growth within its gaming division.
The tech giant spent most of this year downplaying the success of its Xbox business to support the Activision Blizzard acquisition. This strategy led to Microsoft breaking its tradition of not revealing Xbox Series X/S sales numbers, showing their commitment to the deal. While the financials did not provide detailed console sales, they did give insights into the gaming division. Microsoft's gaming business saw sales of approximately $3.49 billion in the second-best fourth quarter to date, with a $36 million increase compared to the previous year. This growth was attributed to new third-party game releases and the popularity of Xbox Game Pass, which saw a 22% increase in quarterly hours played. Microsoft claimed that Xbox achieved new heights in terms of fourth-quarter monthly active users, although specific figures were not provided.
Despite a 13% decrease in hardware revenue, the company was able to achieve a 1% improvement in quarterly gaming turnover. This decline in console sales is not concerning to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, suggesting that there will be no significant changes at Microsoft. According to industry analyst DomsPlaying on Twitter, the conglomerate's total gaming revenue for the full fiscal year was estimated to be $15.47 billion, a decrease of $760 million compared to the pandemic-influenced 2022.
Microsoft's minor quarterly gaming growth partially mitigated the declining growth margin of its personal computing division, which saw a 2% decrease ($124 million) in revenue and direct costs during the observed period. Furthermore, this growth contributed to a $186 million increase in operating income, a 4% rise compared to the final quarter of the 2022 fiscal year.
Microsoft is optimistic about the future of Xbox Game Pass Core, a recently announced alternative to Xbox Live Gold. The company anticipates that this upcoming service will enhance its console subscriptions by greatly enhancing the value of Xbox Live Gold. As a result, users will gain a more significant insight into the advantages offered by the more expensive Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tier. These benefits include a vast content library and frequent discounts for members.
