WWII bomb near German soccer stadium to be safely detonated

A World War II bomb discovered near the Bundesliga soccer club Mainz 05's stadium is scheduled for safe detonation on Friday to ensure the safety of the area.

An unexploded World War II bomb found near the home of Bundesliga soccer club Mainz 05 is scheduled to be defused on Friday.

The city of Mainz announced that the 500-kilogram (1,102-pound) American bomb was discovered during construction work on Wednesday, leading to the evacuation of the local area.

Mainz 05’s MEWA Arena is located just outside the 750m (roughly 2,460 feet) evacuation radius. However, as a precaution, the club decided to move its Friday press conference to Thursday after the discovery of a bomb nearby.

In addition, the club shop at the stadium will be closed on Friday while the bomb is being defused, as confirmed by the team.

The club is gearing up to face FC Köln on Sunday in a crucial match as both teams battle to stay out of the relegation zone this season. Mainz 05 assured CNN Sport that the game will proceed as scheduled without any disruptions.

Mainz 05 is currently positioned 15th in the league standings, narrowly avoiding the relegation zone based on goal difference. On the other hand, FC Köln finds themselves in 17th place, trailing Mainz by five points.

The city stated that approximately 3,500 people have been affected by the evacuation due to the bomb, but it is uncertain how long it will take to defuse and dispose of it. The process of defusing the bomb started at midday local time.

In Germany, it is not uncommon to come across unexploded World War II ordnance. Because of this, companies frequently enlist the services of private bomb disposal teams to ensure that construction sites are safe before any work begins.
