Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp will also be returning after starring in the original show from 1999 to 2006.

The upcoming comedy series, set to debut in January, follows Red and Kitty Forman as they look after their granddaughter, Leia Forman, during her summer visit. Prepon excitedly shared her return to the set, expressing her joy in being back on the familiar sets and reminiscing about the nostalgia and great memories from her time on the show. She anticipates that viewers will thoroughly enjoy the series.

The Orange Is The New Black alum said that returning to her roots as Donna was unexpectedly not strange. She described it as a nostalgic experience, mentioning that hearing Todd Rundgren's song "Hello, It's Me" still makes her burst into tears because it was the pilot song for the Eric and Donna relationship, and holds a special significance for her. She expressed that it was great to return to this role.

Outer Banks will be back on Netflix for its third season in February 2022, promising an exciting new chapter in the teen drama. The story picks up with John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, JJ, and newcomer Cleo stranded on a deserted island they name Poguelandia. Showrunners Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke have hinted at the challenges the group will face after their escape overseas.

"We really adored the romance in season 1, and it's something that was a bit lacking in season 2 that we're eager to bring back," Pate told Entertainment Weekly in July 2021. "Our goal is to develop the characters in a way that allows for more romantic storylines in season 3."

Burke chimed in, saying, "In season 2, we were really focused on action. For season 3, we want to make space for more teen drama and romance, as a guiding principle."

In the upcoming chapter of Outer Banks, audiences can anticipate Big John taking on a significant role. Pate mentioned, "We always knew it was a possibility and we have this card we can play. In the development of the season, it became clear that we wanted to play it at the end of the season. It has always been a lingering idea and thematically, it sets up some things we want to explore in the third season." For additional new and returning shows this winter, keep scrolling.

Winter TV Preview 2023: Inside the Must-Watch New and Returning Shows

Settle in! The winter season is upon us — and it won't be long before new and returning shows are back on our screens.

The upcoming spinoff of That '70s Show, titled That ‘90s Show, will reunite the original cast including Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and Wilmer Valderrama, along with Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp. The comedy series, set to be released in January, follows Red and Kitty Forman as they oversee their granddaughter, Leia Forman, during her summer visit.

Before the Netflix show's premiere, Prepon shared her excitement about returning to the set. "It's incredibly fun. It's the same old sets," the actress teased during an interview with We in June 2022. "When I first walked in, I got emotional. The nostalgia is so intense and it was such a wonderful time in my life. I can't wait for people to see it. I think they're going to love it."

The Orange Is The New Black alum revealed that returning to her role as Donna felt "oddly" familiar, rather than "weird."

“The nostalgia just hit me,” she shared. “It’s like, I still get emotional hearing Todd Rundgren’s ‘Hello, It’s Me’ because that was the song for Eric and Donna. It was the theme of their relationship, a really pivotal song. But it’s great to come back.”

In February 2022, viewers can anticipate the arrival of Outer Banks’ third season on Netflix. The next installment of the teen drama picks up after John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, JJ, and newcomer Cleo find themselves on a deserted island they dub Poguelandia.

During a conversation with Entertainment Weekly in July 2021, showrunners Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke hinted at what challenges the group of teenagers will face after their escape abroad, emphasizing a return to the theme of romance in season 3.

"We were launched into season 2 with great intensity," said Burke. "But in season 3, we are looking to create more space for the teen drama and romances that are central to the show."

In the next installment of Outer Banks, the audience can expect Big John to have a significant impact on the storyline. "We always had this possibility in mind and now it's time to make use of it," Pate explained. "As the season unfolded, it became clear that we wanted to incorporate it towards the end. It has always been a lingering idea and thematically, it sets the stage for what we want to explore in the third season."
