William Lewis appointed as new Publisher and CEO of the Washington Post, succeeding interim CEO Patty Stonesifer Effective Jan 2, 2024, Lewis brings extensive experience to lead the renowned publication into the future

In a statement, the Washington Post announced that William Lewis, an experienced figure in the news media industry, has been appointed as its new publisher and CEO. This appointment comes during a crucial period for the newspaper, characterized by financial challenges, a dynamic media landscape, and the upcoming presidential election. Commencing his role on January 2, 2024, Lewis is set to undertake these responsibilities.

Lewis stated in a statement that leading this courageous media brand involves enhancing my dedication to promoting exceptional journalism and protecting our democratic principles. Simultaneously, I aim to expand The Posts business and propel its influence into the future and beyond. Lewis will assume control of one of the country's most renowned media institutions amidst a period of transformation for American journalism as a whole, and particularly for the Washington Post. The organization has faced challenges such as layoffs, a decline in readership, and escalating expenses, resulting in a decrease in morale.

Lewis, the creator, CEO, and publisher of The News Movement, a media platform targeting Gen-Z, previously held the positions of CEO at Dow Jones and publisher at the Wall Street Journal.

Following its acquisition by Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, in 2013, the Washington Post witnessed a significant increase in its readership, especially during the tenure of former President Donald Trump.

The newspaper in the capital of the country has faced difficulties in retaining its readership since the Trump administration ended. Like many other news outlets, the Washington Post has had to confront the consequences of changing reading preferences among Americans. Interim CEO Patty Stonesifer acknowledged that the paper had incurred excessive expenses during the tenure of former CEO Fred Ryan.

Additionally, she revealed that the readership of the publication has significantly declined since Trump's departure from the White House. The digital audience has dropped by a staggering 28% since 2021. Furthermore, Stonesifer noted a decline of 15% in digital subscriptions. In June, the previous publisher and chief executive, Fred Ryan, announced his resignation after nearly a decade leading the Washington Post.

Despite his contribution in leading the paper to win numerous Pulitzers and gaining industry-wide recognition, he faced backlash from the newsroom due to his sudden announcement of layoffs last year.

Bezos released a statement expressing his commitment to the future of The Washington Post, which was inspired by its ambitious and impactful journalism, ten years ago. He stated his confidence in the future of the paper, attributing it to Will, an exceptional and determined industry executive with a successful background in fierce and award-winning journalism, who he believes is the perfect leader for the current time.
