The long-awaited sequel to I am Legend has been in development for years, and finally, Will Smith has confirmed his involvement in the project, alongside another actor.
Known for his unforgettable roles in films like Aladdin, Men in Black, and King Richard, Will Smith is also fondly remembered for his performances in sci-fi movies like Hancock and I am Legend, which have a dedicated fan base wishing for more recognition and praise.
The latter film's plot centers on Robert Neville (played by Smith), a skilled scientist and survivor of a man-made plague that turns people into bloodthirsty mutants. He roams alone through New York City, searching for other potential survivors and diligently working on developing a cure for the plague using his own immune blood. Despite being painfully outnumbered and facing slim odds, Neville remains vigilant as the infected patiently wait for him to slip up and fall into their clutches. Despite being released over a decade ago in 2007 and receiving a Critics Score of 68% on Rotten Tomatoes, I Am Legend has remained a significant part of popular culture and has sparked rumors of a sequel for years. Finally, the sequel has been confirmed.
Will Smith talks about I Am Legend 2 – What will it be about?
Addressing the audience at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, Smith disclosed, "I have a scheduled call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. The script has just been delivered... I might be revealing too many details..."
The actor revealed that despite his character appearing to die at the end of the first film, I am Legend is known for its alternative ending in which the protagonist survives, and the sequel will be based on that.
"We're sticking to the mythology of the DVD version where my character survived," he stated. "I can't share much more, but Michael B. Jordan is on board and we're making it happen."
The movie had been announced earlier this year by Akiva Goldsman, the writer and producer of the first film. But fans can now get hyped with Smith’s confirmation.
Smith also touched on the controversial Oscar slap of 2022, where he struck host Chris Rock just before winning Best Actor for King Richard. "What I've learned in the face of my recent challenges is that I don't need external validation to stay focused on my goals," he said. "My mission has always been to spread positivity, bring joy and inspiration, and make people smile. I want everyone to feel good, and that's why I'm here.
"However, I'm also human," the actor added. "I'm still working on perfecting my moral character. The most important thing for me now is to humbly continue working on being a better version of myself. This next chapter of my life will be dedicated to perfecting my light and sharing it with as many people as possible."
There is currently no given date for when we can expect Smith’s return to I am Legend, but we’ll be sure to post the news when we find out.
