Wendi McClendon-Covey, known for her role as Beverly in The Goldbergs, recently shared in an interview with Screen Rant why a revival of the show is not on the cards anytime soon. The popular sitcom, which first aired on ABC in September 2013, was created by Adam F. Goldberg and is loosely based on his experiences growing up in the 1980s. Featuring a talented cast including Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, Jeff Garlin, AJ Michalka, Sam Lerner, and the late George Segal, The Goldbergs concluded in 2023 after a successful run of ten seasons and 229 episodes.
McClendon-Covey mentioned that it is too early to consider a revival of The Goldbergs, but expressed her enthusiasm for the possibility of reuniting with her fellow cast members and crew in the future.
Could The Goldbergs Continue After A Sweet Sendoff?
Since we just wrapped up a year ago, it's definitely too early to think about a comeback. However, I would be more than happy to work with my schmoopies again. I have a lot of love for the people I worked with, including our crew, writers, and executives. If there's a chance to reunite for a movie or special, I would be honored to be part of it.
Can a college-based spinoff happen?
In the season finale of The Goldbergs that aired in May 2023, Adam joins Beverly at her high school reunion. There, Beverly reconnects with George, her former high school sweetheart. In the episode titled "Bev to the Future", Adam initially struggles with the idea of Beverly moving on from his late father. However, as the story unfolds, Adam eventually accepts George. This touching conclusion pays tribute to the show's history by including the patriarch Murray Goldberg and highlighting the special bond between Beverly and Adam.
There is a possibility of a sitcom revival through a spinoff. Despite wrapping up important relationships and giving closure to characters after ten seasons, The Goldbergs still has some unresolved questions. One of them being whether Adam ever made it to college, as his plans were disrupted by Murray's passing.
Just like The '90s Show, a spinoff of The '70s Show on Netflix, there is a demand for heartwarming comedies that tap into nostalgia for past decades. A potential spinoff could continue to reflect on pivotal years and carry on the beloved humor of the original show. However, for now, one of the show's actors has given a clear and simple explanation for why The Goldbergs won't be making a return anytime soon.
The Goldbergs is available to stream on Hulu.
Editor's P/S:
I am a bit disappointed to hear that there are currently no plans for a revival of "The Goldbergs." The show was a heartwarming and hilarious look at family life in the 1980s, and I enjoyed watching it very much. I understand that the show wrapped up its storylines nicely, but I would have loved to see more of the Goldberg family's adventures.
However, I am hopeful that a spinoff or reunion movie could happen in the future. The show has a large and loyal fan base, and I think there would be a lot of interest in seeing the characters again. I would especially like to see a spinoff that follows Adam in college. I think it would be a great way to continue the show's legacy and explore new stories and characters.
