During a recent episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg, 67, shared valuable advice for financially struggling millennials. She acknowledged that every generation strives to surpass the achievements of their parents, but emphasized that expecting success while working only four hours a day can pose challenges, particularly in attaining homeownership. She further remarked, "We worked tirelessly to achieve our goals."
Goldberg's remarks came during a Wednesday Hot Topics discussion regarding millennials' perspectives on the American Dream and their prospects of acquiring property and starting families. (According to Merriam-Webster, millennials are individuals born in the 1980s or 1990s.) Alyssa Farah Griffin offered a contrasting opinion, highlighting that Goldberg's generation was responsible for the housing crisis. Goldberg, however, remained unfazed.
"You hear it every generation, this idea that you'll never surpass your parents," she remarked. "But guess what? People take that challenge and forge their own paths. That's what being a responsible member of society entails."
In a controversial statement last year, Kim Kardashian faced criticism for expressing a similar sentiment. "I have some powerful advice for women in the business world. Get up and put in the damn effort. It feels like nobody wants to put in the work nowadays," the 43-year-old Kardashian stated during an interview with Variety in March 2022.
Later that month, the reality star offered further explanation of her remark while appearing on Good Morning America. She clarified that her statement was not intended as a generalization about women or to undermine their hard work and dedication. Kardashian acknowledged that her words had been misconstrued and expressed remorse if they were perceived in such a manner. She emphasized that her tone and attitude at the time were influenced by the preceding question about being famous solely for her fame.
Goldberg, the EGOT winner, has never been afraid to express her controversial opinions. In July, she made a dramatic exit from the View stage during a disagreement with Sunny Hostin over Miranda Lambert's criticism of fans taking selfies at one of her Las Vegas shows.
"I will take as many selfies as I please, especially if I've paid $757 for tickets," Hostin, 55, stated. However, Goldberg quickly came to Lambert's defense, arguing in favor of the 39-year-old singer.
"Just stay home," she snapped, her voice laced with annoyance. "If you're going to shell out $750 to attend my concert, show me the courtesy of actually witnessing my performance, or don't bother coming at all."
Having heard Hostin's explanation about capturing memories through photographs, Goldberg abruptly rose from her chair and instructed Hostin, "Switch on the television, my dear."
