The Reacher series is known for its faithful adaptation of the source material, but which of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels is Season 2 of the Prime Video series based on? With 28 novels already published and a 29th set for release in October 2024, there is certainly a wide array of options to choose from.
The first season of Reacher, based on the 1997 novel Killing Floor, was a natural choice to kick off the action-crime series, as it was the first Reacher story by Child. In contrast, the Jack Reacher movies starring Tom Cruise, set in a separate continuity from the streaming series, drew inspiration from the novels One Shot (2005) and Never Go Back (2013).
Which Jack Reacher book is Season 2 based on?
Reacher Season 2 is based on Bad Luck and Trouble, Lee Child’s 11th entry in the Jack Reacher canon.
If the show had followed the books’ publication order, Season 2 would have adapted 1998’s Die Trying. The same would have applied if showrunner Nick Santora had maintained the series’ in-universe timeline, since Die Trying picks up after the events of Killing Floor.
Even though Reacher’s second season diverges from Child’s chronology, it largely stays true to Bad Luck and Trouble itself. Like the book, Season 2 sees Reacher attempting to solve the murder of one of his old army buddies, Calvin Franz (Luke Bilyk).
Reacher’s second season cuts a key character
Reacher’s newest episodes continue the trend of featuring Maria Sten’s Frances Neagley, following the lead of Bad Luck and Trouble. Neagley's request for Jack's assistance sets the stage for Season 2, just as it does in Child's original novel.
The absence of Roscoe Conklin in Reacher Season 2 mirrors the same absence in the book Bad Luck and Trouble, which aligns with the established series canon. Willa Fitzgerald, who played Roscoe in Season 1, expressed her support for this decision, stating that it allows for a clean and complete story to be told before moving on.

Editor's P/S
As a hard fan of the Jack Reacher series, I am thrilled that Season 2 of the Prime Video series is based on Bad Luck and Trouble, the 11th book in Lee Child's Jack Reacher canon. I have been eagerly waiting for this adaptation, and I am confident that it will stay true to the spirit of the original novel while also bringing something new and exciting to the screen.
I am particularly excited to see how the show handles the character of Frances Neagley, who plays a pivotal role in Bad Luck and Trouble. In the book, Neagley is a former military police officer who enlists Reacher's help in investigating the murder of her nephew. She is a strong and capable woman who is more than a match for Reacher, and I am eager to see how their dynamic is portrayed on screen.
