The Christmas chart is indeed a real phenomenon in the United Kingdom, contrary to popular belief that it was only a creation of the movie "Love Actually." This year, the iconic band Wham! has claimed the top spot with their beloved hit "Last Christmas," as announced by BBC 1 Radio. George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, the duo behind Wham!, have certainly left their mark on the Official Charts Christmas list.
The Wham! official account and Official Charts shared a social media post on Friday featuring Ridgeley reacting to the news. In a video, he expressed, "George would be beside himself, after all these years, to finally attain the Christmas no. 1 spot." Ridgeley also described the achievement as a "mission accomplished," noting that Michael had written the song with the intention of reaching this milestone.
Wham! and "Last Christmas" have gained significant attention this year, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney from "Welcome to Wrexham" recently creating a humorous spoof of the band and the iconic album image on Instagram.
The black and white photo was framed in a way similar to the cover of the popular holiday single, featuring Reynolds with the iconic floppy blond hair made famous by Michael.
"WREXHAM!" read the caption on McElhenney's Instagram post featuring the photo.
Wham! released "Last Christmas" in December 1984 and it held the number two spot on the UK Singles Chart for five consecutive weeks. The song has been covered by various artists, such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Jimmy Eat World, and the Backstreet Boys.
Ridgeley is the surviving member of Wham!, after Michael died on Christmas day almost seven years ago, in 2016.
