West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice projected to secure Republican nomination for Senate seat, CNN predicts

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice is projected to win the state's Republican US Senate primary, according to CNN. This positions the two-term governor as the clear favorite to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin in the deep-red state.

Justice is expected to win a crowded GOP primary that included US Rep. Alex Mooney, a member of the hard-line House Freedom Caucus. He will go on to face the winner of a three-way Democratic primary. The West Virginia Senate seat has been widely considered as the most likely to flip this cycle, making it crucial to GOP hopes of winning the Senate in November.

Manchin's retirement dealt a tough blow to Democrats’ hopes of keeping their slim majority in the chamber. The party is also working hard to defend seats in other states like Montana and Ohio, as well as in swing states such as Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

In the West Virginia Republican primary, national Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, mostly rallied around Justice, who was unable to seek reelection as governor due to term limits. However, as the Senate race entered its final weeks, tensions escalated between Justice and Mooney, with both candidates exchanging sharp attacks on the airwaves.

Mooney accused Justice of supporting “pro-transgender legislation” and claimed that he “pushed the biggest tax hike in West Virginia history.”

In response, Justice, the owner of the Greenbrier resort and a successful businessman, countered some of Mooney’s claims by featuring testimonials from West Virginia coal miners in his ads. He also highlighted Trump’s endorsement and criticized those, including Mooney, who are trying to ride on Trump’s popularity.

Justice, 73, was elected governor in 2016 as a Democrat but switched his party affiliation early in his first term. He made this announcement at an August 2017 rally with Trump.

Despite Justice winning as a Democrat in 2016 and Manchin being reelected in 2018, West Virginia is now a heavily Republican state. Trump received over 68% of the vote there in both the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections. Manchin stands as the lone remaining Democrat holding nonjudicial statewide office.

Earlier this week, The New York Times reported that Justice and his companies are currently dealing with several legal issues due to large debts that his business is known for not paying.
