It's time to return to The Matrix.

Warner Bros revealed on Wednesday, April 3, that a fifth movie in the sci-fi series is being planned. This time, the former Matrix directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski won't be leading the project. Instead, The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard will be taking on the roles of director and writer. Lana, who directed the 2021 Matrix film Resurrections, will be involved as an executive producer.

There is no confirmation yet on whether the previous stars like Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jonathan Groff, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas will be back for the next Matrix movie. The studio is keeping quiet about the storyline, but Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president Jesse Ehrman hinted that fans can expect some changes in the movie.

Ehrman mentioned, "Drew brought a fresh idea to Warner Bros. that we all believe will be a fantastic way to expand the Matrix universe. It will pay homage to what Lana and Lilly started over 25 years ago while also offering a new perspective based on his own passion for the series and characters." The whole team at Warner Bros. Discovery is excited for Drew to bring his vision to this new Matrix film and contribute to the legacy created by the Wachowskis over the years.

Goddard, known for his work on World War Z and Cloverfield, expressed his enthusiasm for joining the Matrix universe in a personal statement. He highlighted how the movies had a profound impact on both the film industry and his own life.

He expressed his admiration for Lana and Lilly’s incredible talent, stating that their work continues to inspire him every day. He also mentioned his gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of their storytelling world.

Reeves, known for his role as Neo in the previous four Matrix films, mentioned that he had declined offers from other agents interested in creating another Matrix movie. During the promotion of Resurrections in 2021, he shared that his interest in returning to the franchise was not very high until he received a message from Lana.

He admitted to The Sydney Morning Herald that he had reservations about participating in a project that did not have the approval of the Wachowskis. However, he expressed his gratitude and excitement when Lana contacted him about the fourth installment of the series, The Matrix Resurrections.

The film, which came out twenty years later than the original, resonated with Reeves because of its message.

Reeves mentioned, "It was really about the love story. [Lana's] wish to reunite Neo and Trinity [Carrie-Anne Moss], and the belief that it could be beneficial for her, the narrative, and maybe even for the viewers."
