Gaijin Entertainment's popular vehicular combat game, War Thunder, is facing a barrage of negative reviews in the wake of recent changes made to the in-game economy. Unlike other games that have been subject to review bombing, War Thunder's backlash is rooted in genuine player dissatisfaction and frustration.
The changes made by Gaijin Entertainment have significantly reduced the amount of Silver Lions currency that players can earn through regular play, making it much harder to unlock new vehicles without resorting to real-world money. Additionally, the developer has lowered Research Points rewards, further limiting players' ability to progress in the game without paying for Golden Eagles, the premium currency.

The War Thunder community has expressed extreme dissatisfaction with the recent economy tweaks made by Gaijin. Over 65,000 negative reviews have been posted on Steam since the changes were implemented on May 17, far surpassing the ongoing Redfall review-bombing efforts. Despite Gaijin's promise to cancel the controversial changes, the negative feedback continues to pour in and has yet to show any signs of slowing down as of Monday.
Many players were unhappy with the fact that Gaijin did not immediately and unconditionally reverse the changes. Instead, the company has announced plans to revise the War Thunder economy with a mid-summer update. Gaijin has also pledged to communicate the changes in a more transparent manner and ahead of time, in an effort to avoid similar backlash from the community.
However, despite being free-to-play, many experienced players are bombarding War Thunder with negative reviews. They claim that they are struggling to afford the cost of repairing their vehicles after each match, let alone researching and purchasing new units. This unfortunate situation raises concerns about the future of the game, especially as it approaches its tenth anniversary and with its recent jump to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. It is uncertain if new players joining War Thunder today stand a chance of catching up with the consistent influx of content. While players are calling for immediate changes to the game's economy to make it more free-to-play-friendly, Gaijin has explained that the sheer size of the game makes it difficult to implement additional changes quickly. They have, however, launched a survey for all players to share their feedback on the current state of War Thunder, which is open until May 25.
War Thunder is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
