Agatha Harkness, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn, made her debut in the limited Disney+ series Wandavision. Her portrayal of the scheming sorceress captivated audiences and surprised them by becoming an unexpected antagonist. Leveraging her unassuming appearance and her origins from the Marvel comic books, she delivered a memorable musical villain reveal that won over both newcomers and diehard Marvel fans. Following the positive response from fans, a spinoff was announced under the initial title Agatha: House of Harkness. The show achieved further recognition with a Grammy nomination for the villainous musical number "Agatha All Along".

Despite already being far removed from the success of Wandavision, the spin-off series, which was eventually renamed Agatha: Coven of Chaos ahead of filming starting in November 2022, has faced premiere delays due to a schedule-wide shake-up at Disney. This is in response to ongoing strikes and changes to the company's streaming strategy for the Disney+ platform. A recent report from Deadline has confirmed that the series will no longer be released in 2023, but instead aims for a premiere in the lead-up to Halloween 2024. Additionally, the project has undergone yet another name change and is now known as Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.

The change in the release date can be easily attributed to the ongoing shake-ups and was predictable. This is the first official mention of the new title, although there have been hints about the change. Actress Aubrey Plaza, who plays a villainous role in the Hahn-led spinoff, shared a banner featuring the new name in The Princess Diaries style, along with a Disney-style Marvel Studios logo on her social media. Although this image was not taken too seriously since similar spoof logos had been seen on set before, it appears that the new name is now official.

The reason for the name change is likely unimportant, but it seems to reinforce the idea that the Agatha Harkness spinoff is Marvel's least necessary project, especially considering the significant delay in its release. The overall performance of the MCU has declined, particularly with projects that have little connection to the overarching narrative of the upcoming theatrical releases. While there has been speculation about how Scarlet Witch and other Wandavision characters might rejoin the mainline MCU, it is highly unlikely that Agatha: Darkhold Diaries will serve as the platform for it.

Given the current circumstances, fans cannot be expected to maintain their excitement for Agatha's spin-off show, considering the significant gap between it and Wandavision.
